Claude Giroux isn’t heading back to Philadelphia after all.
A report on Friday afternoon had the former Flyers captain returning to the team where he spent the first 15 years of his career, but that move was never confirmed. By Monday night, NHL insider Elliotte Friedman had the update: Giroux is staying in Ottawa.

Giroux’s path has taken him from Philadelphia to Florida and then to Ottawa, where he signed a three-year deal after that playoff run with the Panthers. He later remained with the Senators on a one-year deal last offseason, and there had even been talk that he might retire before this offseason. Instead, he’s set for a 20th NHL season and will turn 39 in January.
For Flyers fans, that means the reunion will have to wait. Philadelphia already has a crowded forward group, and the situation could get even tighter if they land Leo Carlsson. Even then, the club would have needed to clear space to bring Giroux back into the mix.
And there’s no question he still brings plenty to the table. Last season, Giroux put up 14 goals and 35 assists for 49 points in 82 games.
The year before, his production was almost the same, with one more goal in one fewer game. He has also been durable in Ottawa, missing just one game over the last four seasons.
That kind of veteran presence would have mattered for a Flyers power play that has struggled badly since his first run in Orange and Black. Giroux also finished his Philadelphia career with exactly 900 points in 1,000 games, and his final game there had the feel of a goodbye.
Still, the door on a reunion isn’t completely shut.
Ottawa traded Brady Tkachuk after being swept in the first round by the Carolina Hurricanes, and the NHL has a way of changing quickly. If the Senators slide out of the playoff race by the trade deadline and the Flyers are still in it, a Giroux return to Philadelphia could come back into play.
That’s a long chain of ifs, but it’s not impossible.
For now, Giroux is headed back to Ottawa, and Flyers fans will have to wait and see when he and the Senators come to Philadelphia next season. When they do, don’t be surprised if a few orange No. 28 jerseys show up in the stands.
