Alex Bump gave the Flyers exactly the kind of lift you’d expect from a prospect with NHL time already under his belt.
Bump finished with a goal and an assist Saturday night, and Philadelphia used that performance to edge the New York Rangers 3-2 at PPL Center in Allentown, PA in the first rookie game of the weekend.
The Flyers got on the board first when Matthew Gard cleaned up a scramble in front and buried the opening goal at 4:23. New York answered late in the period, cashing in on the power play at 15:20 when Liam Greentree’s shot was redirected by Dylan Roobroeck to make it 1-1.
The Rangers carried an 11-8 edge in shots after 20 minutes, but Philadelphia started to tilt things back in the second. With less than five minutes left in the period, Bump slipped a pass to a wide-open Cole Knuble in front, and Knuble finished to put the Flyers back ahead 2-1.
That was just the start of Bump’s night. He struck again 44 seconds into the third period, stretching the lead to 3-1. The Rangers trimmed it right back 49 seconds later on a power-play goal from Nathan Aspinall, who scored from the left circle, but that was as close as they got.
Philadelphia finished with a 22-15 shot advantage through two periods, and the goaltending held up the rest of the way. Carson Bjarnason stopped 27 of 29 shots for the Flyers, while Callum Tung made 26 saves on 29 shots for the Rangers.
The two teams will meet again Sunday at 5 p.m. at PPL Center to wrap up the Rookie Series.
