The Philadelphia Flyers are carrying a little momentum into Buffalo, but they still haven’t solved the road issue. That’s the backdrop Wednesday night at KeyBank Center, where the Flyers (2-6-3) meet the Sabres (4-3-2) in a 7:30 p.m. ET puck drop on TNT.
Philadelphia is finally strung together something positive after opening the season with nine straight games without a win. The Flyers snapped that skid with a 3-1 win over the Ottawa Senators on Saturday, then turned around and beat the Colorado Avalanche 3-2 on Monday. Matvei Michkov was front and center in that upset, scoring twice and pushing his season line to 6 goals and 1 assist.
The challenge now is doing it away from home. The Flyers are still 0-4-1 on the road, even with the recent surge.
Buffalo, meanwhile, is coming home after a Canadian road trip that was anything but ordinary. All three games went to extra time, and the Sabres came away with one win and 4 of 6 possible points. That trip also gave Ukko-Pekka Luukkonen a chance to strengthen his case for the No. 1 job in net, even with a 3.59 GGA and .860 SV%.
Offensively, Tage Thompson has set the pace for Buffalo with 5 goals and 4 assists. The Sabres are also expecting defenseman Rasmus Dahlin back from a back injury for this game.
The 2025-26 season series is tied 1-1, and both teams protected home ice the first two times they met.
In goal, Joseph Woll is projected for Philadelphia opposite Luukkonen for Buffalo. Woll, who is 4-2-0 with a 2.53 GAA and .886 SV%, was in net for the Flyers’ win over Colorado.
Over his last five starts, he has allowed more than two goals in regulation just once, a 4-1 loss to the Carolina Hurricanes on Oct. 11.
Luukkonen, 3-2-2 with the 3.59 GGA and .860 SV%, handled the pressure well during Buffalo’s road trip, with both losses requiring a shootout or overtime. He is 1-1 at home this season.
Prediction: Sabres 4, Flyers 3.
On the betting side, the moneyline is a pass. The Sabres at -185 are too steep.
The sharper angle is Flyers +1.5 (-160), with the idea that Philadelphia can keep this close even if Buffalo pulls it out late. The Flyers are also 6-5 ATS this season despite their record.
For the total, the lean is OVER 6 (-110). Buffalo has gone 6-3 to the over, while Philadelphia is 2-9 to the under in this spot. The pick to win still goes Buffalo’s way, especially with Dahlin expected back.
The best prop is Matvei Michkov anytime goal (+235). He has scored in three straight games and has buried five total in that stretch.

Flyers May Have Finally Found A Power Play Fit For Michkov And Zegras
Rick Tocchet has been shuffling the Flyers power-play setup in search of a better fit, and the early signs have been encouraging. The changes have given Matvei Michkov a more natural lane to operate in, and the unit has looked sharper since the coach adjusted the personnel and spacing around him.
The real intrigue is how Trevor Zegras has been used in the mix, with Tocchet trying to unlock more from a group that needed a jolt. Michkovs recent power-play production has helped validate the approach, but the broader question for Philadelphia is whether this alignment can stick once opponents start game-planning for it. Flyers Surge Just Changed Danny Brieres Trade Deadline Pressure
The Flyers spent the early stretch of the season trying to keep their footing while key players were hurt and the results lagged behind the effort. General manager Danny Briere resisted the temptation to force a move during that rough patch, in part because the roster was so banged up and in part because there was little reason to sell off pieces when the team had yet to find any rhythm.
A small surge has changed the tone around the front office, though, and it has added a different kind of pressure. Two straight wins, including one over the Colorado Avalanche, gave the Flyers a little more breathing room and showed younger players can help steady the lineup, which makes Brieres trade-deadline decisions look a lot less straightforward than they did just a short time ago. Kings Roster Pressure Is Growing As Two Problems Demand Answers
A crowded wing picture has the Flyers kicking around a familiar kind of roster math: good players, not enough clean fit, and a desire to add more punch up front. With the top six still in need of a real jolt, the front office has at least started to think about whether a bigger move could help balance the lineup and give the team a more natural scoring mix.
The ripple effect could reach beyond the forwards, too, because the Flyers are also taking a harder look at the blue line and the pieces they already have in place. Cam York is part of that conversation as the club weighs who fits long term and who might become part of a larger trade path, which is exactly the sort of evaluation that tends to follow when a team starts chasing a cleaner roster structure.
