The Flyers and Capitals meet Wednesday night in Washington with both teams carrying some clear trends into a Metropolitan Division matchup at Capital One Arena.
Philadelphia enters at 3-7-4 and is on the second night of a back-to-back after dropping a 4-3 overtime decision at home against the Columbus Blue Jackets on Tuesday. Washington, 6-4-0, comes in having won three of its last four after a 4-3 overtime victory over the Buffalo Sabres on Saturday.
That win was part of a 5-game homestand the Capitals are still finishing, and it featured RW Alex Tuch scoring twice, including the game-winner against his former team. The season series between these clubs is tied 2-2, and the home team has won every game so far.
The Flyers are expected to turn to Joseph Woll, who is 1-4-2 with a 2.99 GAA and .904 save percentage. He last played Saturday, when he stopped 21 shots but allowed 5 goals in a 5-4 loss to the Anaheim Ducks.
Philadelphia had a 2-0 lead after the first period in that game. Woll had allowed just 2 goals in each of his previous two starts, and he is 0-2-1 on the road this season with 7 goals allowed in those three outings.
Charlie Lindgren is projected to go for Washington. He is 2-1-0 with a 2.98 GAA and .886 save percentage.
Lindgren made 18 saves on 21 shots in Saturday’s overtime win over Buffalo and has won two straight starts despite giving up 7 goals in those games. Logan Thompson’s lower-body injury has forced more work onto Lindgren, though Thompson - listed as day-to-day - is eligible to come off injured reserve before Wednesday’s game.
From a betting angle, the Capitals are a slight favorite, but there’s reason to be careful with the number. Washington has gone 3-3-0 over its last six, and two of those wins came by one goal. The Caps are averaging 3.40 goals per game, but the underlying chance creation points to a team that may be running a little hot offensively.
Philadelphia’s numbers are uglier overall, but the Flyers have shown some life after that 0-6-3 start. Their issue has been finishing, especially at 5-on-5, not necessarily generating looks. NaturalStatTrick has Philly as a 5-on-5 expected-goals plus in each of its last four games.
Woll has also generally handled this matchup well, posting a .913 save percentage in six career games against Washington. His road track record and the Flyers’ recent improvement make the plus money with Philadelphia getting the puck line appealing.
The Under also draws support. The last five meetings in this series have gone 4-1 to the Under, and the Flyers have allowed just 24.5 shots per game over their last six.
Both teams are solid on the penalty kill, and this matchup leans a bit toward fading the offenses. Philadelphia has allowed 3.29 goals per game, while Washington has yielded 3.20, and both figures are projected to dip.
Prediction: Capitals 3, Flyers 2
BACK PHILADELPHIA +1.5 (-130)
UNDER 6 (+100)

Flyers Showed Fight But One Familiar Problem Ruined It Again
For a Flyers team trying to keep building on signs of progress, Tuesdays loss in Columbus had the frustrating shape of a game that got away, then nearly came back, then slipped away for good. The Blue Jackets jumped out to a three-goal lead in the first period, and Philadelphia spent the rest of the night digging out of it before falling 4-3 in overtime, with Cam Talbot turning aside 28 shots for Columbus and Dan Vladar making 11 saves for the Flyers.
The rally was enough to make this one feel like two different games, which only sharpened the disappointment once overtime arrived. Philadelphia showed plenty of fight to erase the deficit and force the extra session, but the finish again left the Flyers with the same familiar problem they have been trying to solve: finding a way to turn effort and recovery into points before the night gets decided in the smallest of margins. Flyers Keep Showing Fight But One Problem Wont Go Away
The Flyers keep finding ways to make games interesting, even if the early hole keeps costing them. In Wednesdays 4-3 overtime loss to the Blue Jackets at Xfinity Mobile Arena, Philadelphia dug itself out of a 3-0 first-period deficit and forced extra time, another sign that the group has not lost its fight even as it keeps chasing more consistency. Dan Vladar made 11 saves on 15 shots, and the home team at least gave itself a chance after a rough opening frame.
Cam York was back after missing eight games, which was a welcome sight for a blue line that has been dealing with turnover and injury, while Rasmus Ristolainen was out again because of a reinjured left hand. Still, the same issue lingered long enough to matter: Columbus eventually broke through in overtime and left the Flyers with another hard-luck result to sort through as the season keeps grinding forward. Flyers Suddenly Have A Trade Rumor They Cannot Let Linger
A sluggish start has a way of turning even the steadier names on a roster into conversation pieces, and Travis Konecny has landed there for the Flyers. His play has naturally drawn attention as Philadelphia searches for traction, but the noise around him has also grown in a way that feels more like speculative chatter than anything grounded in an actual transaction.
There is no real sign the Flyers are seriously entertaining a move, and for good reason. Konecny remains a valuable top-six forward, and the long-term commitment tied to him makes any trade far from simple, especially when a club still needs proven scoring help. For now, the rumor mill is doing most of the work, even if it is the kind of talk the Flyers probably cannot afford to let sit around for long. [Read more 🡒]
