The Philadelphia Flyers rolled into Washington, D.C., riding a three-game win streak, ready to face the Capitals in a matchup with significant playoff implications. Dan Vladar took the net for the Flyers, while Porter Martone made his NHL debut, stepping in for Alex Bump. Despite their resilience, the Flyers couldn't overcome an early deficit and fell to the Capitals, dropping their record to 37-25-12.
The game kicked off with the Capitals seizing an early power play after Martone's delay of game penalty. The Flyers' penalty kill was sharp, with Noah Cates nearly capitalizing on a shorthanded opportunity, but the puck slipped away at the last moment.
Philadelphia earned their first power play midway through the period but couldn't convert, thanks to Capitals goalie Logan Thompson, who stymied attempts from Cates, Matvei Michkov, and Owen Tippett. Rasmus Sandin's critical block on Travis Konecny kept the Flyers at bay.
Tom Wilson opened the scoring for Washington with a slick snapshot off a drop pass from Pierre-Luc Dubois. Moments later, Alex Ovechkin doubled the lead, capitalizing on a perfect setup from Matt Roy, leaving Vladar out of position.
As the first period wound down, a four-on-four situation arose with penalties to Trevor Zegras and Connor McMichael. The Flyers took advantage early in the second period when Travis Sanheim found the net with a snapshot from Konecny's feed, cutting the Capitals' lead to 2-1.
Carl Grundstrom leveled the game shortly after with a wrist shot, courtesy of a clever backward pass from Zegras. However, the Capitals quickly regained their edge. Jakob Chychrun's slapshot on the power play, set up by Ryan Leonard and Dubois, put Washington back in front.
Despite earning another power play, the Flyers struggled to generate momentum, with Vladar making a key save on Anthony Beauvillier during a shorthanded stretch. The Capitals extended their lead to 4-2 with Leonard's power play goal, assisted by Dubois and Chychrun.
The Flyers opened the third period with a quick strike from Christian Dvorak, who netted a pass from Konecny to bring the score to 4-3. Yet, Ovechkin responded with his second goal of the night, pushing the Capitals back ahead by two.
Philadelphia continued to battle, with Denver Barkey deflecting Rasmus Ristolainen's shot to make it a one-goal game once more. The intensity remained high as both teams went four-on-four again, but neither could capitalize.
In the final minutes, the Flyers pulled Vladar for an extra attacker, but the gamble didn't pay off. Wilson sealed the win for the Capitals with an empty-net goal, assisted by Dubois and Roy.
The Flyers went 0-for-3 on the power play and managed to kill just one of the Capitals' three man-advantages. Vladar's night ended with 12 saves on 17 shots, a tough outing for the netminder.
Philadelphia will look to bounce back against the Detroit Red Wings on Thursday, April 2, back on home ice.
