The Flyers are reshaping their hockey operations staff ahead of the 2026-27 season, with a mix of internal promotions and outside additions across the training, performance and rehabilitation areas.
Alex Ambrose is moving up to Head Athletic Trainer after previously serving as the team’s Assistant Athletic Trainer. Ambrose has been with Philadelphia since 2023 and now steps into the role formerly held by Tommy Alva.
The assistant athletic trainer job is going to Zach Casinelli, who comes in after serving as Head Athletic Trainer for the Charlotte Checkers, the Florida Panthers’ AHL affiliate. Casinelli was elevated to that position in 2023 after being hired as an assistant in 2021.
Philadelphia also promoted from within at massage therapist. Melissa Rucker is now the team’s Head Massage Therapist after spending the past six seasons with the Flyers in that role. She brings 16 years of experience in the field.
On the performance side, the Flyers added Abe Edson as Head of Athlete Performance. Edson spent the last two seasons as the Minnesota Wild’s Assistant Strength and Conditioning coach.
Chris Gratton is joining Edson as a Performance Coach. Gratton worked under Edson in Springfield with the Thunderbirds and also spent last season as the Phantoms’ Head Strength and Conditioning coach.
Lorne Goldberg rounds out Edson’s staff as a Performance Development Coach, bringing more than 40 years of Pro-Hockey coaching experience.
The Flyers also brought in Ryan Adkins as Director of Athlete Rehabilitation, marking a switch from baseball to hockey. Adkins previously worked as a Physical Therapist for the Seattle Mariners and Milwaukee Brewers prios.

Flyers Fans Just Got An Early Look At The Next Wave
The Flyers are giving fans an early look at the next wave with the release of their 2026-27 Rookie Camp roster, a group that will gather at PPL Center in Allentown beginning Sept. 11. The camp brings together 15 rookie forwards, eight defensemen and three goaltenders, mixing recent draft picks with signed players as Philadelphia starts another round of evaluation before the season gets rolling.

Matvei Michkov Enters A Huge Flyers Season With Even More At Stake
Matvei Michkov arrives at this Flyers season with the kind of attention that follows a promising player after a playoff run. The third-year winger has already put himself on the radar as one of the most important pieces of Philadelphias next step, and his offseason work in Russia has only sharpened the focus around how much more he might have to give. Even in a league that tends to reward patience, Michkov is now being measured against bigger expectations and a bigger stage.
Former Flyers captain Chris Pronger recently pointed to Michkovs continued room to grow and suggested the winger looks in better physical condition heading into camp. Around the team, there is also quiet curiosity about how the Flyers might position him to get the most out of his skill set, with Trevor Zegras one name being discussed as a possible fit. The Flyers have spent the past few seasons in the kind of draft position teams usually hope to avoid, but it has also given them a pipeline of premium young talent. Porter Martone arrived sixth overall in 2024 after Matvei Michkov went seventh in 2023, giving Philadelphia a pair of high-end building blocks as the organization tries to climb out of its long reset and back toward relevance.
Chris Pronger recently put the task in stark terms, noting how hard it is to assemble a true Cup contender without elite draft help, even if it can be done. For Danny Briere, the challenge is making sure the Flyers do not rush the process, which is why cap flexibility remains part of the plan as they look for the right moment to keep improving without boxing themselves in.
