Denver Barkey has always faced questions about his size, standing at 5'10" and just over 170 pounds. Yet, in the NHL, he's proving that size isn't everything.
Barkey's game is about playing bigger than his frame, embracing physicality rather than avoiding it. In 34 games, he’s racked up 36 hits, averaging over four hits per 60 minutes.
Clearly, he's not shying away from contact.
In a recent game against Columbus, Barkey's physical play was on full display, drawing a double minor and rattling the opposition. It’s this fearless approach that’s turning heads in Philadelphia.
Barkey's recall in December was unexpected, especially after the Flyers lost Tyson Foerster for the season. The team had other options, but Barkey, who only made his professional debut a few months prior, stepped up.
General manager Daniel Briere noted, “We thought he’d be in the minors for two or three years. But when a player is ready, we make room.”
Fast forward nearly four months, and Barkey continues to defy expectations. His performance against the Chicago Blackhawks was lauded by head coach Rick Tocchet as one of his best. Barkey scored a crucial rebound goal and boasted the third-best Corsi For percentage among forwards, trailing only Travis Konecny and Trevor Zegras.
Comparing this to his performance against the Minnesota Wild, where he excelled in advanced metrics, Barkey shows consistency. He’s not just holding his own; he’s thriving. The Flyers excel in advanced offensive categories when he’s on the ice, despite being outscored overall-a testament to his influence.
Playing alongside Trevor Zegras and Owen Tippett has also been beneficial. The trio, in nearly 36 minutes of ice time, dominates possession metrics, holding at least a 50 percent advantage across the board.
Their "worst" stat? They've scored two goals while conceding two.
Though the sample size is small, Barkey’s impact is undeniable. He’s proving himself capable much sooner than anticipated, fitting his pattern of exceeding expectations. The Flyers have a promising player on their hands, and Barkey's journey is just beginning.
