The strangest image from Eagles-Titans on Sunday turned out to have a very simple explanation: the Titans were trying to keep their cleats from melting.
A viral clip showed a player sitting on the field while water was sprayed on his shoes, and that moment made a lot more sense once the temperature situation in Nashville came into focus. The turf at Nissan Stadium reportedly reached 157 degrees, and Titans players had already dealt with shoes literally melting off during their home opener a week earlier. That forced the team to take unusual precautions before it happened again.
Titans safety Amani Booker said his cleats “melted completely off” during last week’s season opener, which is why the water was coming out on Sunday.
The heat didn’t just affect the players. Eagles coach Nick Sirianni needed an IV after the game, even after standing on the sideline rather than playing a snap.
“It was hot as s---,” Sirianni said after his team’s 24-20 win. “I didn’t play a snap and I had to get an IV.
I so appreciate how much the guys prepared. I so appreciate how much they fought through because it wasn’t easy.”
Players on both sides described a game that felt brutal from the opening whistle. Eagles left tackle Jordan Mailata told ESPN, “I’ve never thought about how hot a stadium can be if it’s turf.
[The heat] just sits there and bounces up into you,” then added, “We’ve got to bring it up. This is why we want all grass fields, to create a standard of play in the league where we're not putting players in dangerous positions if we don't have to.”
Cam Jurgens had his own blunt description of what the afternoon felt like.
“Halftime was like a NASCAR pit crew helping me get ready for the second half,” Eagles offensive lineman Cam Jurgens said. “That turf was just radiating.”
The numbers around the game backed up the discomfort. The game-time temperature was 95 degrees, with a real-feel temperature of 105. Tim McManus reported that a heat dome had settled over Nashville in recent weeks, and that helped drive the field temperature to the extreme level seen Sunday.
Lane Johnson said the game belonged near the top of the list when it came to physical and mental strain.
“It was one of the top five toughest games I've been a part of,” Philadelphia’s veteran offensive tackle Lane Johnson said to ESPN. “It was a mental test for everyone involved.”
Even with all that, the Eagles still found a way to finish. Down three points with 1:57 left in the fourth quarter, Jalen Hurts led the offense on the final drive and capped it with a three-yard touchdown pass to Darius Cooper with nine seconds left, sealing the comeback win.
For Tennessee, the hope now is simple: no more days like that one. The Titans’ next two games are on the road, and they do not return home until they host the Texans on Oct. 11.
