The Eagles have spent plenty of time talking about what their new under-center offense can do for Saquon Barkley. Fair enough. A one-cut, outside zone approach should help clean up a running game that too often looked stuck in place.
But Barkley isn’t the only back who could cash in.
Tank Bigsby is making an early case for a bigger role in 2026, and the first few days of training camp have only sharpened that idea. The Eagles’ No. 2 running back has already flashed the kind of burst and balance that make him easy to notice. He’s looked smooth catching passes out of the backfield, popped off a few explosive runs and even picked up some first-team reps.
No, this is not about Bigsby taking Barkley’s job. Barkley, the 2024 NFL Offensive Player of the Year, still projects as a major bounce-back candidate after last season’s disappointment.
What Bigsby can do is carve out more real work than he got a year ago.
Acquired last September from the Jaguars, the 2023 third-round pick needed some time to settle in. Once he did, though, he looked like a different player.
He ran with force. He ran angry.
He brought a style that was easy to like and hard to miss, and he quickly won over the fan base.
The only issue was volume.
Bigsby finished 2025 with 356 rushing yards on 63 carries, good for 5.7 yards per attempt. Strip out the backup-heavy Week 18 exhibition, and he had just 47 carries while averaging nearly six yards a pop. Those numbers came in a Kevin Patullo offense that never really found its footing.
Now he’s in a system that appears far better suited to him.
At 5-foot-11 and 215 pounds, Bigsby has already shown he can get to the edge, plant and burst upfield for extra yardage. He’s decisive hitting the hole and tough to knock off track. That stretch zone look should fit him cleanly.
He’s already hinting at what that could look like.
On Thursday, the 23-year-old ripped off multiple long runs into the end zone. The Eagles weren’t in pads, so there’s only so much you can read into it. Still, on those plays, it didn’t exactly look like anyone was going to drag him down.
That’s why the Eagles should lean into his skill set more this season. Maybe it comes in 21 personnel with Barkley and Bigsby sharing the field. Maybe it means giving Barkley, now 29, more in-game breathers so he’s fresher when the fourth quarter and playoffs roll around.
However they do it, the point is clear: Bigsby has more to give, and the fit looks better now than it did last year.
