Diggs’ hugging-the-goal-post move drew an unsportsmanlike conduct penalty after his touchdown cut the Eagles’ lead to 17-15. Washington had been set up to go for a two-point conversion to tie the game, but the penalty backed them up 15 yards and forced Dan Quinn to kick a long extra point instead. That made it 17-16, and it was a massive swing in a game the Commanders eventually lost 24-22.
There’s no way to know for sure what would’ve happened without the flag. Washington still would’ve had to finish the job, and the Eagles did get a late dagger when Jalen Hurts hit Dallas Goedert on a 43-yard touchdown pass with just over six minutes left in the fourth quarter. But the penalty clearly changed the shape of the finish.
And if you want to play out the alternate version, it gets even messier for Washington. If the Commanders convert the original two-point try to tie it at 17, then Antonio Williams’ touchdown with 1:01 left would have made it 24-23. Another two-point attempt there could’ve put Washington ahead 25-24 with a minute to play.
Instead, Diggs’ celebration left the Commanders chasing points. What looked like a big moment for him became a costly one for his team, and it may have been the difference between starting 1-0 on the road against a division rival and walking out of Philly with a loss.
