Saquon Barkley is buzzing with excitement as he embraces the fresh offensive scheme brought in by Sean Mannion, the new offensive coordinator for the Eagles. After experiencing a year under Kevin Patullo, Barkley is ready for a change and eager to see what Mannion's system can offer.
In a conversation with NFL Network's Tom Pelissero and Judy Battista, Barkley shared his enthusiasm for the new direction. "I'm super excited about it," he said.
Now entering his ninth year in the league, Barkley has been through a variety of systems and coaches, but Mannion's approach feels different. "It's refreshing when you get something new to learn," he added.
Barkley hasn't delved into the X's and O's with Mannion yet, but he's already impressed by the new coaching staff. "As a competitor, you love the challenge of a new system," he noted, emphasizing the opportunity to both showcase his strengths and work on areas for improvement. With the right mindset, Barkley believes the offense has limitless potential.
Reflecting on last season, where the Eagles struggled offensively despite Barkley's historic Super Bowl-winning year under Kellen Moore, the team is eager to turn the page. Mannion, with roots in the Mike Shanahan coaching tree and experience under Sean McVay and Matt LaFleur, brings a creative and smart approach that excites Barkley. "All the guys we hired are super smart and competitive," he said, confident in the talent and coaching staff's ability to elevate the team.
With OTAs on the horizon, Barkley is focused on learning the new playbook and building chemistry with the revamped coaching staff. "We have the talent and great coaches. Now we just have to put it all together," he stated, ready to leave last year's struggles behind.
Barkley's offseason routine has also evolved as he looks to maintain peak performance deeper into his career. Gone are the days of solely focusing on lifting heavy and running fast.
Now, he's honing in on body mechanics and injury prevention. "I'm attacking the angles, working on my knees, ankles, and hips," Barkley explained, emphasizing the importance of staying healthy and improving as an athlete.
Embracing new methods, from trampolines to hula hoops, Barkley is committed to a routine that keeps him in top shape. "You want to play as long as you can and be super successful," he said, confident that his new approach will help him achieve longevity and success in the league.
