Saquon Barkley walked into the Eagles locker room on Thursday with the message the season needs right now: this is not over.
Philadelphia is staring at a four-game losing streak, Jalen Hurts is out for the season with blood clots, Lane Johnson retired, and the injury list has already battered the roster for weeks. Even so, Barkley sees a path forward for a team sitting at 2-4.
The star running back is expected to play against the Dallas Cowboys after missing a few weeks with a hamstring injury, and he thinks the NFC East is still there for the taking.
“The beautiful thing about this situation is everything that we want is still there,” Barkley said. “Right now, you’re not looking too far ahead, but the NFC East is struggling.
The NFC East is asking for someone to take over. There’s going to be a team that figures it out and starts playing at a high level.
And we have that opportunity. We have that chance.”
Barkley said Hurts’ medical situation is “extremely rare,” but he also made clear that he’s seen enough chaos before to know what it looks like when injuries start ripping through a team. After six uneven seasons with the New York Giants, he’s been through “crazy injuries” before.
What he believes separates these Eagles from those Giants teams is the talent still sitting in the South Philly locker room.
“Even with all the crazy injuries and everything that’s happened, we still have a lot of talent,” Barkley said. “And we have a culture that’s a winning culture.”
Barkley has been part of that culture for the past two seasons, winning the Super Bowl in 2024 and a second straight NFC East title in 2025. Now he’s trying to help steady a team that has slid hard but still has time to respond.
Through a little more than four games, Barkley has 182 rushing yards on 36 carries, a 5.1-yard average. He didn’t guarantee he’ll be on the field Monday night, though he said he wanted to play last week against the Carolina Panthers and was back at practice Thursday.
That was enough for him to frame the moment as a turning point.
“It takes one game,” Barkley said. “It takes one game to kind of get things flowing, get things going in the right direction.
“You’re going to see what you’re really about. It’s so easy to come in this building and put on a smile and come to work when the world is patting you on the back.
When you’re 13-4 and you’re the hottest thing and everyone’s scared of the Eagles. It’s challenging when it’s the opposite way.
“I’m not from this area, but I live close enough and was raised close enough, that’s what Philly’s about. ... There’s a reason why there’s a statue of a fictional boxer, and his name is Rocky.
That’s what this town is about. I feel like they’re going to back us up.
But it also takes us taking that mindset. Leadership is going to have to step up, and positivity is going to have to be at an all-time high.”

Eagles May Have Found An Unexpected Edge Rusher To Watch
When the Eagles needed help on the edge, Keyshawn James-Newby suddenly found himself in the middle of the action. The rookie had spent the year on the practice squad before being elevated for his first NFL game, and the opportunity came with a much bigger workload than anyone likely expected.
James-Newby ended up logging 48 snaps and held up well enough to get noticed by teammates and Vic Fangio after the game. He chipped in two tackles and two hurries, and for a player who was just trying to make the most of a call-up, that kind of debut gives Philadelphia something interesting to track as the edge room continues to sort itself out. Eagles Suddenly Have A Big Monday Night Question On Offense
The Eagles Week 7 injury report added another layer of uncertainty to a game that was already carrying plenty of weight, with Monday Night Football against the Cowboys now arriving with several offensive questions still hanging in the air. Philadelphia listed six players as non-participants in practice and eight more as limited, while 10 others were full participants, a snapshot that suggests the team is still sorting through availability as it gets closer to kickoff.
On the offensive side, the biggest concern is the collection of players still working through injuries, including DeVonta Smith and Dallas Goedert, two central pieces of the passing game whose status will shape how the Eagles can attack Dallas. Saquon Barkley was among the limited participants as well, giving Philadelphia a clearer sense of where some key veterans stand, but the final answer on who will actually be available is still the kind of thing that can swing a primetime game plan in a hurry. Eagles Suddenly Face Bigger Questions Than The Jalen Hurts Controversy
Saquon Barkley pushed back on the swirl around Jalen Hurts this week, making clear he did not like the way the quarterbacks situation was being framed. Barkley praised Hurts and wished him a speedy recovery, trying to steer the conversation away from any suggestion that the issue should be read as the Eagles and their quarterback being on opposite sides of the same story.
The larger concern in Philadelphia is that the Hurts situation may only be the start of what comes next. Once a team is suddenly dealing with a major health issue at quarterback, the questions do not stay confined to one player for long, and the chatter around Barkley has already drifted into whether the roster picture could change in a bigger way.
