Saquon Barkley Could Change Everything For Eagles Against Dallas

As Saquon Barkley nears a comeback from injury, his potential return against the Cowboys could be the boost the Eagles need to revitalize their struggling offense.

Saquon Barkley is trending toward a return when the Eagles face the Cowboys on Monday Night Football, and Philadelphia could use him.

Barkley has missed the last two games after hurting his hamstring on the second drive of the Week 4 loss to the Los Angeles Rams. The Eagles dropped both of those games while he watched from the sideline, but the signs this week have pointed toward a possible comeback in Week 7.

Philadelphia started hinting at the move earlier in the week with a few roster decisions that opened space at running back. The team placed Carson Steele on IR after he suffered a shoulder injury in the Week 6 loss to the Carolina Panthers.

The Eagles also released Jaydon Blue and Ian Wheeler, with Blue later returning to the practice squad, and signed Elijah Mitchell to the practice squad. That kind of maneuvering at the position was the first real clue Barkley could be back.

NFL insider Mike Garafolo then reported that Barkley was slated to practice during the week and was in line to start against the Cowboys. Barkley was limited in all three Eagles practices, and the final injury report listed him as questionable with a hamstring injury.

That tag leaves some uncertainty, but the overall picture points in one direction.

The Eagles have badly missed Barkley in the run game. Over the last two games without him, Philadelphia has rushed for just 57 yards on 31 carries, a miserable 1.8 yards per attempt. Dameon Pierce handled 23 carries across those matchups, and the injury hits kept piling up afterward, with Will Shipley and Steele both going on IR in back-to-back weeks.

Barkley’s numbers this season show why his return matters. He has run for 182 yards on 36 carries and caught four passes for eight yards, while averaging 5.1 yards per carry, one yard better than last season.

The timing looks even better for Philly because DeVonta Smith and Dontayvion Wicks will not be available, which puts even more of the offense on Barkley’s shoulders. There is also a chance Landon Dickerson returns from his knee injury, which could give the Eagles a better chance to lean on the ground game.

The matchup itself also offers an opening. Dallas has allowed the second-most rushing yards per game in the league this season at 149.8, so if Barkley is active, he could be the spark Philadelphia needs.

Nothing is final until the inactive list comes out, but all signs suggest Barkley is on track to play. If he does, the Eagles may have just enough firepower to challenge a 2-4 Cowboys team with the same record as Philadelphia.

Eagles Face A Bigger Week 7 Problem Than DeVonta Smith

DeVonta Smith is set to miss his third game of the season with a hamstring injury, leaving the Eagles to patch together another week without one of their most reliable targets. Philadelphia has already had to lean on other receivers to keep the passing game moving, with Makai Lemon, Darius Cooper, Elijah Moore and Marquise Brown all positioned to absorb more snaps in Smiths absence, along with the lingering void left by Dontayvion Wicks.

The bigger concern may be on the other side of the ball, where Michael Carter II is also out and the defense has to navigate another game without him. The Eagles have been able to survive some missing pieces on offense, but Carters absence is more unsettling because the players filling in for him have already given up far more production, and that could matter against a Cowboys offense built to test the secondary. Eagles Face Sudden NFC East Pressure On A Brutal Monday Night

Entering Week 7, the NFC East has taken a sharp turn, and the Eagles are suddenly chasing from behind. A Giants overtime win over the Texans has pushed New York out to a two-game lead, putting extra weight on a Monday night visit from Dallas that already carried plenty of intrigue.

Philadelphia is trying to keep itself in the race without Jalen Hurts, with Tanner McKee set to make the start and several other key contributors unavailable as well. Against a Cowboys team on prime time, the margin for error is thin, and a win is the only way to keep the division picture from slipping further away. [Read more 🡒]

Eagles Pass Rusher Gets A Huge Cowboys Chance At The Perfect Time

Arnold Ebiketie has spent much of his first season in Philadelphia in a familiar role for a veteran edge rusher looking to prove himself, working as the Eagles fourth pass rusher on a one-year deal and waiting for the kind of opportunity that can change how a season is viewed. Injuries around him have created exactly that opening, and after logging 91% of the defensive snaps in Week 6, he is in line to get an even bigger chance against the Dallas Cowboys. For a player trying to show he can be more than a rotational piece, the timing could not be much better.

Ebiketie has talked about staying locked in on the present and on the chance to raise his value, which is a pretty natural focus for a player approaching free agency. The Cowboys game gives him a stage that matters beyond one afternoon, especially with the Eagles needing reliable production off the edge while other pass rushers are sidelined. For Ebiketie, the next few weeks could go a long way toward shaping how his season is remembered and how teams view him when the market opens. [Read more 🡒]
