The NFL has asked the Department of Homeland Security to pull down a video that used Brian Dawkins highlights and imagery without permission, according to league spokesman Brian McCarthy.
The clip, which was posted Sunday evening by a DHS account in response to claims about a migrant caravan approaching the southern border, mixed hard-hitting football footage with Dawkins’ familiar pregame chant. It opened with the former Philadelphia Eagles safety preparing for battle and saying his signature phrase before rolling into a series of violent collisions. DHS captioned the post: “Our time has come.”
Dawkins pushed back on the use of his name and image. “I have very respectfully not given permission.” In a separate video response, he said again that no consent had been given for the use of his name, image and likeness.
Neither the NFL nor the Eagles approved the footage, and a team source confirmed that neither side consented to this specific use. The league controls official game film and does not often allow outside groups to repurpose it without approval.
DHS did not remove the video right away. It was still online Monday evening, even after the league’s formal request. When asked about it, DHS said it is playing lockdown defense at the border and will use every available tool to keep Americans safe, while also referencing Dawkins’ old “Weapon X” nickname.
The episode echoes another recent case of official social media accounts using NFL material. Earlier this year, the White House posted a video that blended football highlights with footage tied to military action in Iran.
At the time, the NFL did not issue a public comment, and that video remained online for months. Ryan Clark also criticized the White House for what he called embarrassing actions involving similar use of sports footage.
Dawkins spent 13 of his 16 pro seasons in Philadelphia and was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 2018. His punishing style and fiery pregame routine helped make him a fan favorite in Philadelphia. As of the latest reports, the DHS video was still circulating, and the NFL has not said whether it will pursue additional legal action after its initial request.
