Nick Saban Sends Strong Message As Pressure Builds On Jalen Hurts

Nick Saban acknowledges Jalen Hurts' grit and resilience, setting a powerful narrative ahead of the Eagles' challenging matchup against the Jaguars.

Nick Saban took a moment on College GameDay to shine a spotlight on Jalen Hurts, and the praise came with the kind of weight only a former Alabama coach can bring.

Hurts is already dealing with a rough setup heading into Week 5 against the Jaguars. The Eagles quarterback is set for a road trip without top offensive weapons DaVonta Smith and Saquon Barkley, and he also talked about losing two key linemen. After a Week 4 loss to the Los Angeles Rams, where Hurts completed 44.4% of his passes for 93 yards in a 24-20 defeat, the criticism around him has only grown louder amid the Eagles’ injury pileup.

Saban, though, was quick to remind people who Hurts has been through pressure before.

He pointed back to the 2018 national championship game, when he benched Hurts for Tua Tagovailoa at halftime and Alabama stormed back for a 26-23 win over the Georgia Bulldogs. Saban said, “This was one of the most difficult decisions I ever had to make as a coach,” and noted Hurts was 26-2 as a starter at the time.

What stood out most to Saban wasn’t the switch itself, but the way Hurts handled it. “The thing that's understated about all this is how Jalen Hurts managed and handled the difficult circumstance that he was put in,” he said, adding that Hurts returned the next year and led Alabama to the SEC championship.

Saban went even further in praising his former quarterback’s makeup: “This guy's character in that situation has been…Just understated. And I think people should really recognize, just how much character he really has…I'm proud of the way he handled that, and it made him better. So sometimes when bad things happen, it makes you better.”

With Eagles fans watching a battered offense try to survive another week, Saban’s words landed as more than just a nostalgic Alabama story. They served as a reminder that Hurts has already lived through one of football’s hardest public gut punches - and came out of it stronger.

Eagles Offense Is Sliding Into Territory Fans Never Expected

The Eagles offense has drifted into an uncomfortable place this season, the kind of stretch that has longtime observers doing a double take at numbers that used to feel unthinkable in Philadelphia. A team built around high expectations and a star-studded roster is now fighting through consistency issues that go beyond one bad day, and the concern is not just about scoring, but about how often the unit is failing to look like itself at all.

There is also the larger backdrop of the London trip, where the Jaguars have generally handled the spotlight far better than teams arriving with momentum problems of their own. For Philadelphia, the setting adds another layer to an already uneasy picture, especially with so much attention being paid to how the offense is functioning and what kind of correction can realistically come next. Eagles Just Created A Roster Decision They Can't Put Off

The Eagles added tight end Zach Ertz and offensive tackle John Ojukwu from the practice squad ahead of their Week 5 matchup with the Jaguars, a routine-looking move that carries a little more weight than it first appears. For Ertz, it gives Philadelphia another option at tight end for Sunday, while Ojukwu provides needed depth up front as the team shuffles through its game-week preparation.

But the bigger roster question is the one hovering in the background, because Ertzs elevation has now been used up and the Eagles cannot keep leaning on that pathway much longer. At the same time, the team is still working through Lane Johnsons retirement paperwork and the salary-cap mechanics tied to his status, which leaves Philadelphia with more than one roster issue it has to settle before these moves stop being temporary. Howie Rosemans Cam Jurgens Move Says A Lot About The Eagles Plan

Howie Roseman keeps finding ways to stockpile options, and the latest move fits the long-view approach that has defined much of Philadelphias roster building. The Eagles dealt center Cam Jurgens to the Ravens for draft capital, adding to a collection of future picks while continuing to manage a roster that has several important contracts winding down over time.

For Philadelphia, the message is less about this one transaction than the flexibility it creates. Roseman has been clear that the aim is sustained success, not a short sprint, and the front office now has more room to maneuver as it waits to see where the roster stands before the trade deadline. Whether the Eagles stay patient or keep reshaping the board, this kind of move suggests they are planning with more than one season in mind. [Read more 🡒]
