Devan Kaney is not interested in apologizing for taking the next step in her career, and she made that clear after some Philadelphia fans came at her online this week.
Kaney, who previously worked as a sideline reporter for WIP covering the Eagles, was laid off in April before landing at FOX Chicago, where she will now report on the Bears. That move drew heat from some Eagles fans who clearly didn’t love seeing her end up in another city.
The backlash surfaced Monday after Kaney posted a routine X update about Bears injury news. In the replies, one Eagles fan labeled her a “Philly turncoat” and wrote, “Enjoy your Cubs, White Sox, Bears, Bulls & Blackhawks you Philly turncoat I guess everyone has a price,”
Kaney pushed back hard, taking aim not just at the insult but at the broader attitude behind it. “Yeah a price like getting paid a living wage.
Getting real sick of Philly people attacking me for doing what’s best for my career,” Kaney wrote. “Maybe turn your attention inwards and ask why Philly sports media has so few opportunities for women or people of color instead.”
A lot of people jumped in on her side after that. The fan who fired off the “turncoat” line was quickly mocked and ratio’d on X, and several others - including people in Philadelphia media - pointed out how tough it is to break into the business in the first place.
“Holy cook 🔥🔥 WIP never valued you the way they should’ve. If they ran a poll you’d win majority vote by Eagles fanbase to be the sideline reporter for them,” one user on X declared.
“What a superb response, @Devan_Kaney ! Wishing you nothing but success in another truly great sports town and overall amazing city,” wrote another.
“They’re just salty you get to have a superior food and city experience. But also, a few minutes on the Goog would help enlighten the slappies on how competitive it is to just find jobs in sports media that pay a decent salary,” a third wrote.
“I don’t think people understand how hard it is to get good jobs in this industry-but I digress,” SI’s Jeff Kerr replied.
Before her move to Chicago, Kaney had also worked as a weekend anchor and reporter for FOX 29 Philadelphia and as an arena host for the Philadelphia Flyers.
