Jalen Hurts and Hollywood Brown are still searching for the kind of timing the Eagles need from them, and Tuesday’s training camp work only put that issue back under the spotlight.
According to NBC Sports Philadelphia Eagles reporter Dave Zangaro, Hurts and Brown were out of sync again during practice before Philadelphia’s preseason meeting with the Baltimore Ravens. The key moment came in 7-on-7 drills, when Hurts tried to fit a pass to Brown and second-year cornerback Mac McWilliams stepped in front of it for an interception.
"During 7-on-7s, Hurts did throw an interception on a pass intended for Hollywood Brown. Second-year CB Mac McWilliams was able to jump the route and pick off the pass. He celebrated with one of the worst punts you’ll ever see.
After practice, Hurts took some time working with Brown on the route that led to the interception."
That extra work after practice says plenty about where things stand. Brown arrived this offseason to bring the kind of speed the Eagles have been missing since Hurts got here, but the connection between quarterback and receiver has not come together smoothly so far. The two have now been off the mark in back-to-back practices, and this latest miss ended with the ball in the wrong hands again.
Hurts has looked more settled overall in camp and has shown he can handle the tougher parts of Sean Mannion’s scheme. He’s also been building chemistry with some of the other new faces in the receiver room. Dontayvion Wicks and Elijah Moore, in particular, have clicked with him.
Brown, though, has been a different story.
Darius Cooper and Wicks have emerged as Hurts’ favorite targets, and Brown has seen his stock fall during camp. The struggle is especially noticeable because Hurts has not really had a receiver with Brown’s kind of speed in Philadelphia. Quez Watkins may be the closest comparison, but he has not matched Brown’s level.
There is still a little less than a month before the NFL season begins, and Brown should make the roster. But the Eagles clearly have work to do here, because the Hurts-to-Brown connection is not where it needs to be yet.
