Jalen Carter's Injury Is Forcing An Eagles Decision Fans Feared

With Jalen Carter's wrist injury impacting his game, the Eagles face a crucial decision on whether to prioritize his long-term health over short-term gains.

The Eagles may be staring at a bigger decision than just how to manage Jalen Carter’s wrist from week to week.

According to Jeff McLane of the Philadelphia Inquirer, Carter has a hairline fracture in his right wrist, an injury he suffered in Week 1. He has been playing with a soft cast, but his workload has dropped in every game since then. Even though he still leads all Eagles defensive tackles in snaps, the production hasn’t looked like the usual Jalen Carter impact.

That matters because the numbers tell the same story the eye test does. Through three games, Carter has seven tackles, one sack, one QB hit and one forced fumble.

Those are useful contributions, but they don’t match the havoc he usually creates in the backfield. The wrist injury appears to be part of the reason.

With a massive NFC matchup against the Los Angeles Rams on deck in Week 4, the question is whether the Eagles should keep pushing through it or step back and think bigger. One option would be to place Carter on the short-term IR and give him time to rest. Recovery time can vary depending on the severity of the fracture, and while a four-week absence likely wouldn’t be enough for the wrist to fully heal, it would at least give him a chance to recover and reset.

There’s also the risk that comes with letting him keep playing hurt. The longer he stays on the field, the more he could aggravate the injury. And the Eagles have already shown they know something is off, cutting his snaps down each week.

Carter’s importance to this defense hasn’t changed. He signed a four-year, $152 million extension this offseason, and expectations only rose from there.

But Philadelphia still has bodies on the interior, including Moro Ojomo, Ty Robinson and Jordan Davis. Carter is the piece that makes the front go, though, and the Eagles know they’re better when he’s at full strength.

This is the kind of situation where the short term and the long term can pull in different directions. Carter is fighting through it, and that toughness matters.

Still, the Eagles may need to protect him from himself. If they want him at his best for the stretch run, a few weeks off could be the smartest move.

Eagles Suddenly Have A Troubling Availability Question Before Rams Game

The Eagles first look at their Week 4 preparation brought an immediate layer of uncertainty, with the injury report offering a snapshot of a roster that is already being watched closely. Zack Baun landing in the NFL concussion protocol is the biggest concern for Philadelphia on the defensive side, especially with the Rams coming to town and the margin for error in the middle of the field likely to be thin.

Philadelphia also has a handful of familiar names working through their own issues, including Marquise Brown, Dallas Goedert and DeVonta Smith, all of whom showed up on the report with different practice participation levels. Even early in the week, the list is long enough to make the Eagles keep a close eye on who can actually get on the field when the matchup with Los Angeles arrives. [Read more 🡒]

Eagles Suddenly Have A Safety Problem They Thought Was Solved

The Eagles went into the season expecting the safety spot beside Reed Blankenships old role to be sorted out, but through Week 3 it has become a job share instead. Marcus Epps and Michael Carter II are splitting the starting duties, with defensive coordinator Vic Fangio confirming the rotation will continue as the team leans on both players in different defensive packages.

For a defense that wanted clarity on the back end after letting Blankenship leave in free agency, the arrangement is at least a workable answer for now, but not exactly a settled one. The Eagles are getting useful snaps from each defender, yet the continued rotation also leaves open the bigger question of whether one of them will seize the spot outright or whether this becomes a long-term committee. Eagles Are Still Tweaking A Depth Spot Fans Should Watch

The Eagles kept their practice squad moving this week, shuffling a couple of names while continuing to fine-tune the back end of the roster. Philadelphia re-signed defensive tackle Gabe Hall, placed linebacker Chance Campbell on the practice squad injured list and added linebacker Anfernee Orji, a veteran of the Saints and Titans, as it looks to keep its defensive depth and special teams options flexible.

Orjis arrival is the kind of under-the-radar move that can matter once injuries and game-day activations start shaping the season. For a team that values versatility at the bottom of the roster, these are the spots worth watching, and the Eagles are still sorting through which pieces can best help when the margins get tight.
