Jalen Carter Is Becoming A Bigger Eagles Problem Than Expected

A promising talent, Jalen Carter battles his mindset and performance consistency amid mounting pressure on the struggling Eagles.

PHILADELPHIA - Jalen Carter has the kind of talent that can tilt a game on command. Right now, though, the Eagles are still waiting for that player to show up with any kind of consistency.

That reality was on display in Monday’s loss to the Cowboys, when Carter finished without a sack or a pressure and was pushed around in the run game. Dallas piled up 204 rushing yards, and Carter’s night fit the larger concern that has followed him through his career: the flashes are undeniable, but they haven’t become the rule.

On Wednesday, defensive coordinator Vic Fangio pointed straight at the problem when asked what Carter needs to do to become more dominant.

“Well, he’s just got to get the mindset to where he’ll be consistent all the time. ... You just need to have the right mindset,” Fangio said.

That’s a pointed message for a fourth-year pro who was just paid like one of the league’s elite. The Eagles handed Carter a four-year, $152-million extension in July, a deal that says they expect a lot more than occasional takeover performances.

Through seven games, Carter has three sacks and three forced fumbles. Two of each came in the Week 5 loss to the Jaguars, when he was the best player on the field. Outside of that game, his impact has been far quieter than Philadelphia needs.

The Eagles need him playing at an All-Pro level to make that investment make sense.

Carter was asked why he looked so different against Jacksonville than he did against Dallas, and he pointed to the way the opponent approached the game.

“Not to downgrade Jacksonville or whatever, but the game plan coming throughout the week from the opponents was different. Cowboys played it smarter,” Carter said on Wednesday.

“They had play for our play every time, whatever you want to call it, and they wanted it more. That’s it.”

He also gave his own season a blunt review.

Carter said his performance this season has been “trash,” and he wasn’t backing off that assessment when the question came up again.

“Y’all ask me this every year, and I say trash,” Carter said when asked to assess how he’s played this year. “I think you asked for this last year and the year before and I gave you the same answer: Trash.

Not to my expectations and, well, I guess not to what the fans want. Don’t really matter what they want.”

The Eagles have dropped five straight, and Carter is part of the reason the season has gone sideways. Most of the team’s top players have underperformed, leaving the roster in a slump that has made every weak spot louder.

Carter has also been playing with a cast on his wrist after an injury in training camp. He said he does not expect to be 100% at any point this season, though he added that treatment has him feeling good.

After the Cowboys loss, Carter did not speak to reporters, something that drew criticism from former Eagles standout Brandon Graham, who questioned his accountability.

Carter pushed back on the idea that he owes the media more access after the team loses.

“I don’t think I’m a public spokesperson,” Carter said. “I think y’all just want to talk to me because we’re losing.”

That response came from a player who was a force during Philadelphia’s 2024 Super Bowl-winning run. Carter helped save the Eagles from elimination in the divisional round when he sacked Rams quarterback Matthew Stafford on one of the game’s final plays.

Now he’s in a very different place. For the first time in his pro or college career, Carter is part of a losing team, and he said the 2-5 record feels different.

“Nah, it was my first time losing,” Carter said when asked whether the record has taken a toll on him. “So, obviously, it feels different. It’s a different atmosphere in the locker room after the game and what you guys say online and stuff like that, but it don’t affect me at all.”

The Eagles may wind up with one of the NFL’s worst records by season’s end. If that happens, they’ll be looking for any positive to hold onto, and one of them has to be Carter living up to the contract they handed him.

If he doesn’t, the season will only get uglier.

Eagles Are Flirting With Another Costly Saquon Barkley Decision

Saquon Barkleys season has already been a stop-and-start one, with injuries piling up and the Eagles trying to manage his workload as the games keep coming. He was back at practice Friday after sitting out the first two sessions of the week, and the expectation is that he will be available for the next game, which only sharpens the attention on how carefully Philadelphia is handling him.

The concern around Barkley is bigger than one practice report because the Eagles are still dealing with the fallout from Jalen Hurts season-ending blood clot situation. Hurts initially had what seemed like a minor issue before it worsened after he kept playing and traveling, and now there is a real unease that Philadelphia could be drifting into the same kind of risk with another key player if it does not get the balance right. Eagles Send A Clear Message About Their Depth Before Commanders Game

The Eagles added some extra insurance for their Week 8 matchup with Washington by elevating running back Elijah Mitchell and edge rusher Mason Reiger from the practice squad. Mitchells move comes with some familiarity, since it is his second temporary elevation of the season, while Reiger is in line to make his Eagles debut as Philadelphia continues to manage the edges of its roster heading into a divisional game.

Philadelphia also left tight end Zach Ertz and cornerback Jakorian Bennett on injured reserve ahead of the Commanders game, keeping those spots unchanged for now. The decisions underscore how the Eagles are piecing together depth on the fly, with the practice squad again serving as a short-term solution as the team prepares for a key NFC East test. Eagles Face A Brutal Sunday Night Test They Desperately Need

Sunday night brings a tricky divisional measuring stick for the Eagles, who head into their matchup with Washington dealing with plenty of outside skepticism and a fair amount of uncertainty of their own. The buildup has centered on recent form, injuries and how both teams stack up right now, with analysts split on which side has the edge and plenty of attention on whether Philadelphia can steady itself in a game that could say a lot about where this season is headed.

Washingtons injury situation adds another layer to the matchup, even if the conversation around the game has mostly focused on how the Eagles respond under the lights. Philadelphia is staring at a test it badly needs, not just for the standings but for the tone it sets going forward, and the fact that so many predictions are still up in the air only underscores how much is riding on this one.
