The Eagles added another name to the cornerback mix, and the timing says plenty about where that room stands.
Philadelphia signed former Baltimore Ravens cornerback Robert Longerbeam and, according to NFL insider Jordan Schultz, the team had been searching for help at the position for a while before landing on him. Schultz said, “The #Eagles had been quietly canvassing the league for another CB in recent weeks, and now sign one in Robert Longerbeam, who is fully healthy after suffering a torn patellar tendon last season.”
The team later announced Longerbeam is headed to the practice squad. Philadelphia also signed WR Danny Gray, OT Kiran Amegadjie, and RB Jaydon Blue.
Longerbeam, a sixth-round pick by the Ravens in the 2025 NFL Draft, did not play a snap last season because of the torn patellar tendon. Now he arrives in Philadelphia as a depth addition, but also as another body competing for attention in a cornerback group that clearly needed one.
The Eagles’ top trio is already in place with Quinyon Mitchell, Cooper DeJean, and Riq Woolen. Beyond that, though, the picture gets messy fast.
Jonathan Jones has some upside, but an injury kept him out of most of camp, which leaves uncertainty around his role. Kelee Ringo and Mac McWilliams also struggled in training camp before still making the 53-man roster.
That’s why this move lands as more than just a routine practice squad addition. It reads like a message to the rest of the room, especially McWilliams and Ringo, that nothing is guaranteed. If the Eagles end up needing help at corner, the questions won’t stop at depth - they’ll start with how this group was put together.
Longerbeam does come with some risk because of the injury history, and that’s not an ideal way to launch an NFL career. But Philadelphia is clearly willing to see whether he can give them something. At the very least, he adds another option to a bench that needs more certainty.
What happens next is still unclear. It remains to be seen whether any roster move follows or whether the Eagles keep tinkering at cornerback. For now, Roseman has made his point: the competition in that room is not over.
