Giants Add Veteran Coach With Deep NFL and College Experience

John Harbaugh continues shaping his Giants staff with a strategic hire on the offensive line, tapping into NFL and college experience to bolster the trenches.

The Giants are bringing in a new face to lead their offensive line room - and it’s a name with deep roots in both the NFL and college football. Mike Bloomgren is set to become New York’s new offensive line coach, according to a league source.

At 49, Bloomgren brings a wealth of experience to the table, with a coaching career that stretches back to 1999 when he got his start as a graduate assistant at Alabama. Most recently, he spent the 2025 season with the Cleveland Browns, a year that saw its fair share of offensive turbulence.

Cleveland cycled through three different quarterbacks and struggled to find any real rhythm, finishing 31st in points scored and 30th in total yards. The Browns also gave up 51 sacks - eighth most in the league - making for a tough season in the trenches.

Still, Bloomgren’s resume tells a much broader story than one rocky year. His first NFL gig came in 2007 with the Jets, where he worked under the tutelage of longtime offensive line guru and former head coach Bill Callahan. Bloomgren spent four years in New York, cutting his teeth as an offensive quality control coach and offensive assistant, before heading west to Stanford in 2011.

At Stanford, Bloomgren’s reputation really started to take shape. Over seven seasons, he served as offensive line coach, run-game coordinator, and eventually offensive coordinator.

During his tenure, the Cardinal posted a 73-25 record and captured two Rose Bowl titles - a stretch that featured some of the most consistent offensive line play in the nation. It’s also where Bloomgren’s offensive philosophy was shaped by another legendary line coach: Dante Scarnecchia.

The former Patriots assistant spent three decades in New England and was widely respected for his ability to develop cohesive, technically sound units up front. Bloomgren has often cited Scarnecchia as a major influence on his coaching style.

After Stanford, Bloomgren took over as head coach at Rice University in 2018. While his overall record with the Owls (25-52) wasn’t eye-popping, he did guide the program to two bowl appearances - a notable achievement for a school that had been searching for stability. Rice fell short in both games, losing to Southern Miss in the 2022 Lending Tree Bowl and Texas State in the 2023 First Responder Bowl.

Now, Bloomgren steps into a Giants situation that’s shown flashes of promise but still has plenty of room to grow. Despite finishing 21st in passing yards and allowing 48 sacks (10th most in the league), New York’s offensive line took a step forward last season, particularly in the run game. The Giants ranked fifth in rushing yards - a testament to improved cohesion up front and a commitment to establishing the ground attack.

The hire also comes amid speculation that the Giants might pursue veteran Eagles offensive line coach Jeff Stoutland, who recently announced he won’t be returning to Philadelphia in 2026. But according to a source, Stoutland wasn’t interested in the Giants’ job.

So the baton passes to Bloomgren, who inherits a line that’s been a work in progress for years. The tools are there - young talent, a strong run game, and a front office that’s shown a willingness to invest in the trenches.

Now it’s up to Bloomgren to mold that group into a unit that can protect the quarterback and power the offense forward. His track record suggests he’s more than capable of doing just that.
