Former Eagles Defensive Lineman Kevin Johnson Dies at 55 in Tragic Circumstances
Kevin Johnson, a former NFL defensive lineman who played for multiple teams including the Philadelphia Eagles, has died at the age of 55. The Los Angeles County Medical Examiner confirmed that Johnson died from blunt head trauma and stab wounds. His death has been ruled a homicide and is under active investigation.
Johnson was found unconscious at a homeless encampment in Los Angeles on Wednesday morning. Authorities believe he had been living there at the time of his death. Friends close to Johnson noted that he had battled health issues in recent years, challenges that likely played a role in his circumstances later in life.
A fourth-round pick by the New England Patriots in the 1993 NFL Draft, Johnson carved out a journeyman career in the league. After initial stints with the Patriots and Minnesota Vikings, he found a role with the Philadelphia Eagles, where he made a notable impact.
In two seasons with Philly, Johnson recorded 43 tackles and notched seven sacks-solid production for a rotational lineman. He even found the end zone once, returning a fumble for a touchdown, a moment that stands out in his NFL résumé.
Johnson also suited up for the Oakland Raiders, appearing in 15 games during the 1997 season. His professional football journey didn’t end there. After his time in the NFL, Johnson transitioned to the Arena Football League, where he played for both the Orlando Predators and the Los Angeles Avengers.
A native of Los Angeles, Johnson stayed close to home for parts of his post-NFL career and had deep roots in the city. Before turning pro, he played college ball at Texas Southern, where he developed into an NFL-caliber talent.
Johnson’s story is a sobering reminder of the challenges some former players face after their football careers end. While he had moments of success on the field, his later years were marked by personal struggles that ultimately led to a tragic end.
The investigation into his death is ongoing.
