The buzz around the NFL is that the Philadelphia Eagles might have a golden opportunity to bolster their secondary by trading for Jessie Bates, the standout safety from the Atlanta Falcons. At 29, Bates is still a top-tier coverage safety, known for his knack for interceptions. He’s snagged at least three picks in each of the last four seasons, and last year, quarterbacks targeting him managed just a 73.7 passer rating.
However, Bates carries a hefty cap hit of $24.8 million in the final year of his contract. With Atlanta’s new regime possibly eyeing draft capital, the Eagles could swoop in to snag a Pro Bowl-caliber talent. This move would be a strategic play, especially after losing Reed Blankenship to the Houston Texans and trading Sydney Brown to the Falcons.
Imagine Bates joining forces with Cooper DeJean and Quinyon Mitchell under Vic Fangio’s defensive scheme. That trio could transform the Eagles' secondary into a formidable unit.
Bates, who played all 17 games last season, racked up three interceptions, 57 solo tackles, a tackle for loss, and two QB hits. His career stats are equally impressive, with 27 interceptions, 535 solo tackles, and a handful of tackles for loss and QB hits since entering the league in 2018 with the Cincinnati Bengals.
The Eagles finished the regular season with an 11-6 record, clinching the NFC East title. However, their playoff run was cut short by the San Francisco 49ers in the wild-card round. Adding a player of Bates’ caliber could be the key to pushing deeper into the postseason next year.
