Jaydon Blue’s run in Dallas ended before it ever really got going, and now the former Cowboys fifth-rounder is trying to restart his career in a familiar place on the other side of the NFC East.
Blue signed with the Philadelphia Eagles practice squad on Monday after clearing waivers and going unclaimed when Dallas cut its roster to 53 players. The move closes the book on a brief and frustrating stint with the Cowboys, who drafted the Texas back in 2025 hoping his speed and receiving ability could give their offense a jolt.
At Texas, Blue flashed enough to make the pick look intriguing. He finished his final college season with 1,098 yards from scrimmage and 14 total touchdowns, and he added another layer at the NFL Scouting Combine when he ran a 4.38 in the 40-yard dash. He also showed real value as a pass-catcher, hauling in 42 receptions for Texas in 2024.
But that promise never translated into much production in Dallas. As a rookie, Blue finished with 129 yards and one touchdown while being inactive for 12 games.
He entered 2026 training camp battling for the backup job, but he was waived during the final roster cuts. After he cleared waivers, head coach Brian Schottenheimer said he was honest with Blue and fellow 2025 pick Phil Mafah that the team wasn’t committed to adding either player to the practice squad.
The Cowboys didn’t end up signing Blue, and the team moved on by claiming Emari Demercado, who has experience working with offensive coordinator Klayton Adams from their time with the Arizona Cardinals.
Blue’s path in Dallas was bumpy from the start. He was beaten out by Miles Sanders for the RB2 role to open the season, then got a shot when Sanders went down with a knee injury after four games.
Blue was active from Week 5 through Week 8, but he managed only 65 yards on 22 carries, and Malik Davis eventually took over his role. After that, Blue was inactive until the Week 18 finale.
He did finish that finale against the New York Giants with 64 yards and a touchdown on 16 attempts, a performance that created some optimism heading into year two. Blue also took responsibility for his struggles and sounded ready to make the most of the chance ahead of him.
Instead, the inconsistency and ball-security problems kept piling up, and Dallas decided to move on. Now Blue gets another shot with Philadelphia, though the depth chart there already includes Saquon Barkley, Tank Bigsby, and Will Shipley, leaving him with a tough climb if he’s going to see any game action this season.
