The Commanders are back from their Week 7 bye with a lot more on the line than a normal divisional rematch. A loss to the Eagles on Sunday night would do more than deepen Washington’s slump - it would push the season closer to a crossroads, with the November 10 trade deadline looming and bigger questions about the roster waiting right behind it.
That’s the backdrop for a game that already feels familiar. When these teams met two months ago in Philadelphia, Washington showed enough fight to make things interesting.
Jayden Daniels shook off a slow start, helped drag the Commanders back within one score, and gave them a real shot at stealing the game late. But a bad play call near the end shut the door, and the Eagles walked away with the win.
Now the setting is different, and so are the teams. Washington comes in at 1-4-1, still searching for its first victory in over a month.
Philadelphia sits at 2-5 after a rough stretch that has turned its offense into a shell of what it was earlier in the year. The Eagles have lost five straight, and their scoring has fallen to 15.8 points per game over that span.
The biggest reason for that slide is the situation at quarterback. Jalen Hurts’ calf injury and the blood clot discovered in Week 5 have left him unlikely to play again this season while he undergoes treatment. That means Tanner McKee is in line to run the offense, and he’ll be doing it without Lane Johnson, the suddenly retired offensive tackle.
Even with the quarterback uncertainty, the Eagles should get Saquon Barkley back in the mix. Barkley, who was limited by a hamstring issue after returning against the Dallas Cowboys on Monday Night Football, was back practicing this week and is expected to play. Washington already saw what he can do in Week 1, when he piled up 83 yards on 15 touches and set what remains his season high.
For the Commanders, this is the kind of game that can clarify who they are. Their run defense has been one of the steadier parts of the team, and they’ll need it again against Barkley.
Washington also still has Daniels, who has been productive even while the mistakes have piled up around him. In his two games since returning from an elbow dislocation, he’s produced more than 600 all-purpose yards, completed over 70% of his passes and thrown four touchdowns despite a battered offensive line and a depleted group of pass catchers.
That production has not always translated into wins, and the Commanders’ recent losses have put head coach Dan Quinn under the microscope. Some of the blame has landed on his game management, and another loss to a wounded Eagles team would only sharpen the pressure. At this point, Quinn may be coaching with his job in the conversation.
A defeat would leave Washington at 1-5-1, hand Philadelphia the season sweep and leave the Commanders with just one win through seven games. It would also force Adam Peters to confront a tougher question about the roster: whether to add help before the deadline or start thinking more about the future.
That’s not where Washington expected to be when the season began. Even now, though, the NFC East is still there for the taking.
The Commanders still have a defense, still have Daniels, and still have a chance to keep the year from slipping away. But if that’s going to happen, Sunday night is the kind of game they have to start winning.

Eagles Are Flirting With Another Costly Saquon Barkley Decision
Saquon Barkleys season has already been a stop-and-start one, with injuries piling up and the Eagles trying to manage his workload as the games keep coming. He was back at practice Friday after sitting out the first two sessions of the week, and the expectation is that he will be available for the next game, which only sharpens the attention on how carefully Philadelphia is handling him.
The concern around Barkley is bigger than one practice report because the Eagles are still dealing with the fallout from Jalen Hurts season-ending blood clot situation. Hurts initially had what seemed like a minor issue before it worsened after he kept playing and traveling, and now there is a real unease that Philadelphia could be drifting into the same kind of risk with another key player if it does not get the balance right. Eagles Send A Clear Message About Their Depth Before Commanders Game
The Eagles added some extra insurance for their Week 8 matchup with Washington by elevating running back Elijah Mitchell and edge rusher Mason Reiger from the practice squad. Mitchells move comes with some familiarity, since it is his second temporary elevation of the season, while Reiger is in line to make his Eagles debut as Philadelphia continues to manage the edges of its roster heading into a divisional game.
Philadelphia also left tight end Zach Ertz and cornerback Jakorian Bennett on injured reserve ahead of the Commanders game, keeping those spots unchanged for now. The decisions underscore how the Eagles are piecing together depth on the fly, with the practice squad again serving as a short-term solution as the team prepares for a key NFC East test. Eagles Face A Brutal Sunday Night Test They Desperately Need
Sunday night brings a tricky divisional measuring stick for the Eagles, who head into their matchup with Washington dealing with plenty of outside skepticism and a fair amount of uncertainty of their own. The buildup has centered on recent form, injuries and how both teams stack up right now, with analysts split on which side has the edge and plenty of attention on whether Philadelphia can steady itself in a game that could say a lot about where this season is headed.
Washingtons injury situation adds another layer to the matchup, even if the conversation around the game has mostly focused on how the Eagles respond under the lights. Philadelphia is staring at a test it badly needs, not just for the standings but for the tone it sets going forward, and the fact that so many predictions are still up in the air only underscores how much is riding on this one.
