The Eagles’ Week 4 plan just got a lot simpler.
Myles Garrett will not be on the other side when Philadelphia meets the Los Angeles Rams, after NFL insider Tom Pelissero reported Garrett is headed for arthroscopic knee surgery and will be placed on IR. That removes a major piece from a matchup the Eagles had already started preparing for.
Garrett’s Rams debut in Week 1 against the San Francisco 49ers never got off the ground. He finished with zeros in tackles, pressures, and sacks, and afterward said he was not 100% going into the game. Now, with the injury news, he’s out of the picture for the trip to Philadelphia in three weeks.
That changes the whole approach for the Eagles. They were going to build part of their game plan around Garrett, coming off the season in which he broke the NFL record for sacks in a season and won Defensive Player of the Year. Instead, the attention shifts elsewhere.
The biggest concern now is Aaron Donald, and that puts more on the shoulders of Cam Jurgens, Tyler Steen, and Landon Dickerson up front. Philadelphia should have more flexibility to double-team Donald and keep him from wrecking the interior.
It also eases things on the edge. Jordan Mailata and Lane Johnson should be able to handle the Rams’ outside rush without as much help, which gives the Eagles more freedom in how they protect.
That matters for Sean Mannion’s play calling, too. With Garrett unavailable, the Eagles can lean more on outside runs in 12 personnel, stay away from the middle of the line, and let Saquon Barkley and Tank Bigsby work the edges.
Philadelphia would have preferred to see Los Angeles at full strength, but Garrett’s absence clearly gives the Eagles a better shot to control the matchup. The focus now is on Donald, and on whether the Eagles can turn this break into an advantage when Week 4 arrives.
