Nick Sirianni isn’t ready to give up on Landon Dickerson, even with the noise around the Eagles’ left guard getting louder.
Dickerson had a rough night in Philadelphia’s 24-22 win over the Washington Commanders on Sunday evening, and the issues weren’t hard to spot. He was shaky in pass protection, uneven as a run blocker, and he looked nothing like the player who was once viewed as one of the NFL’s best guards two years ago.
The concern isn’t limited to one game. Dickerson also struggled last season while playing through a surgically repaired knee, and he had poor practices during training camp this summer, especially in joint sessions against the New England Patriots.
Still, Sirianni made it clear on Monday that he sees reasons to keep Dickerson in the lineup.
“His extreme power,” Sirianni told reporters on Monday about what Dickerson still brings to the table. “He’s a big man who’s able to move guys off the spot.
If you go back and you look at. ... Okay, so he gives up some pressures.
All right. But he also caved in the side on Saquon’s long run on that third down and just did a really good job of pushing their defensive tackle and displacing him, which is a big job description for him.
He’s tough as heck. We’ve won a ton of games with Landon and there’s a lot of good things that he can do.”
That power is still there. The problem is everything around it.
Dickerson’s lack of burst and slow foot speed have turned him into a liability in pass protection, and he simply doesn’t move well anymore. He’s also not a natural fit for the Eagles’ wide-zone scheme, where athleticism and movement matter as much as brute force.
Sirianni kept coming back to the same point: Dickerson had both good and bad moments against Washington, just like everyone else.
“Just like every player on our team from yesterday’s game, and every coach for that matter, there’s good moments and there are moments that we got to fix,” Sirianni said about Dickerson. “That’s where we are. And you know can’t tell you how much I think of Landon and the player that he is and particularly that power and that size where he can move guys off their off the spot against their will.”
Even with Sirianni’s support, the pressure is building. If Dickerson keeps struggling, the Eagles may have to make a hard call and bench him.
At this point, the calls for that move are growing, and they’re not far-fetched. He hasn’t played well enough to make the job feel secure.
