Johnny Mundt and E.J. Jenkins were left to handle the tight end snaps from there.
That’s where things get dicey for Philadelphia. Rookie second-round pick Eli Stowers is already on IR with multiple lower-leg injuries, which leaves the Eagles thin in a spot that suddenly looks alarmingly fragile. The result is a clear call to action for Howie Roseman: get on the phone with Zach Ertz.
Mundt stepped in as the top tight end, but the production wasn’t there. He finished with two catches for eight yards, and even his blocking - the job he was brought in to do - didn’t hold up well. Jenkins was part of the rotation too, but the overall picture only made the tight end room look more exposed.
That’s why Ertz makes so much sense. The former Eagles second-round pick from 2013 spent eight seasons in Philadelphia, made three Pro Bowls, and won a Super Bowl with the team. In 123 career games with the Eagles, he caught 579 passes for 6,267 yards and 38 touchdowns.
Philadelphia traded Ertz to the Arizona Cardinals in 2021. He later spent the last two seasons with the Washington Commanders, but a torn ACL ended his 2025 campaign early. Since then, he has recovered and is ready to play.
A return would also carry some history. Ertz is 11 catches shy of passing Harold Carmichael for the most career receptions in franchise history, which adds another layer to the fit.
And from a football standpoint, he’d give Jalen Hurts a tight end he already knows. The two shared the field for about a year and a half, and that familiarity matters when the depth chart is this bare.
Goedert’s injury history only sharpens the issue. He hasn’t played in 24 games since the 2020 season, so the Eagles have already seen how quickly the position can turn unstable. With Stowers out and the current backups struggling, the team needs more than patchwork answers.
Roseman said before the season that he and Ertz had conversations, though he didn’t detail what was discussed. Those talks figure to come back into focus if money gets involved.
Right now, the message is simple: the Eagles can’t keep rolling with this setup. Mundt and Jenkins did not provide enough against Tennessee, and the offense felt the absence of Goedert. If Philadelphia wants a real answer at tight end, Ertz is the obvious move.
