The Eagles’ quarterback room took another turn Friday, with Tanner McKee landing on the questionable list for Sunday’s matchup against the New York Giants because of a rib injury.
It comes only four days after Philadelphia benched McKee in favor of Joe Milton. If McKee can’t get cleared in time, fifth-round rookie Cole Payton would step in as the top backup behind the starter.
McKee was limited in Friday’s practice, adding another layer to a situation that has shifted quickly. After Jalen Hurts was placed on injured reserve, McKee took over as the starter in Week 6 and put together a line of 72 completions on 114 attempts for 638 yards, two touchdowns and two interceptions.
“Obviously, that’s always a difficult thing to think through because it isn’t ever just on one person,” Eagles coach Nick Sirianni said on Friday about benching McKee. “Matter of fact, I think Tanner played solid, but this is just what I felt like we needed to do right at this particular moment to give ourselves the best chance to win this weekend.”
There’s also a bigger picture hanging over McKee’s status. On Friday, Sports Illustrated reported that NFL teams believe the Eagles could try to trade him before Tuesday’s NFL trade deadline. If that happens, Payton would be in line to serve as the backup for the rest of the season.
McKee is expected to be playing his final season in Philadelphia and is not expected to re-sign with the team when he becomes a free agent this offseason.
That leaves Milton and Payton as possible long-term answers behind center for the Eagles. Milton arrived last month from the Dallas Cowboys’ practice squad, and Sirianni sounded encouraged by what he has seen so far.
“Obviously, he’s talented, and he’s been here for a couple weeks now,” Sirianni said about Milton. “Very talented arm, very talented athlete, can process and make decisions out there.
Just a lot of good qualities that he has. I like his confidence and everything that he brings, and it’s been fun getting to know him and working with him.”

Nick Foles Just Said What Eagles Fans Have Been Thinking
Nick Foles has never been shy about the Philadelphia Eagles, and his latest comments landed because they came from a place fans know well: frustration with how the organization has operated. Speaking on podcasts, the former Super Bowl quarterback pointed to concerns about the teams culture and offensive coaching, saying his criticism is meant for the fan base and aimed at pushing the franchise toward improvement.
For Eagles supporters, it is the kind of candid assessment that echoes a familiar unease whenever the offense stalls or the operation feels out of sync. Foles did not frame it as a drive-by shot so much as a message from someone who has lived inside the building and still feels invested in what happens there, even if the details of his sharpest comparisons remain part of the larger conversation. Eagles Make A QB Change With Offense Desperate For A Spark
With the offense searching for a jolt, Nick Sirianni confirmed Philadelphia is turning to Joe Milton over Tanner McKee for its Week 9 game against the Giants. The switch comes after the Eagles spent time weighing their options with general manager Howie Roseman and the offensive staff, a sign the decision was not made lightly as the team looks for a different look under center.
Sirianni also said he had hoped to keep the move quiet to preserve a competitive edge, but the news leaked before kickoff through ESPN. Even with the reveal out in the open, the choice still leaves the Eagles with a fresh wrinkle at quarterback and a clear sense that the staff believes a change was needed to spark the unit. Eagles Trade Rumors Just Put Howie Roseman Under Real Pressure
With the trade deadline approaching, the Eagles find themselves in an uncomfortable spot, and the chatter around the roster has only intensified with the team sitting at 2-6. Reports have linked several prominent names to possible deals, including offensive linemen Jordan Mailata and Landon Dickerson, along with defensive tackle Jalen Carter and pass rusher Nolan Smith, a level of speculation that says plenty about how quickly the season has gone sideways and how much pressure is now on the front office to consider every option.
Some players have already had to address the rumors publicly, a sign of how far the noise has spread inside the building. For Howie Roseman, the challenge is no longer just deciding whether to buy or sell, but whether any move can realistically help a roster that still has core talent yet is staring at a deadline with more questions than answers.
