The Eagles’ Week 2 win over the Tennessee Titans didn’t leave Philadelphia with much time to breathe. Between injuries, roster moves and a looming Monday night matchup with the Chicago Bears, the team’s focus has already shifted fast.
One of the biggest additions came on the back end of the defense. Philadelphia signed Kenny Moore to a one-year, $3 million contract, bringing in a veteran who knows both Nick Sirianni and Mike Pellegrino from previous stops. Moore, a 2021 Pro Bowler, is expected to handle more nickel and safety duties, a move that points directly to Marcus Epps losing his grip on a role.
The secondary needed help, and the tight end room did too. Dallas Goedert left the Titans game with a sprained MCL after his leg got caught under bodies, and the expectation is that he’ll miss a few weeks.
With Johnny Mundt and E.J. Jenkins the only tight ends on the active roster and rookie second-round pick Eli Stowers on IR with multiple lower leg injuries, the Eagles had to act.
That’s part of why Zach Ertz is back.
Ertz first signed to the practice squad and is expected to be active in Week 3 against the Bears. For Philadelphia, it’s a familiar face returning home. Ertz made three Pro Bowls with the Eagles, caught the go-ahead touchdown in the franchise’s first Super Bowl win, and now sits just 11 receptions away from passing Harold Carmichael for the team’s all-time receptions record.
The roster churn didn’t stop there. To make room, the Eagles released defensive tackle Gabe Hall from the practice squad. Hall had turned in strong preseason work and had not appeared in a regular season game, though defensive coordinator Vic Fangio had praised him for what he showed in practice.
On the field, the Eagles had some highs and some rough edges against Tennessee. Jalen Hurts threw two interceptions that hurt the team, but he also delivered two of his best touchdown throws.
One came to DeVonta Smith in the first half, as Hurts rolled out and fired on the run to the back of the end zone. The other was the game-winner to Darius Cooper with nine seconds left, coming after Hurts escaped pressure and found him for the deciding score.
Cooper also earned a nod for what he did beyond that final catch. He finished with two receptions and added a tackle on special teams, making the most of a limited role.
Nolan Smith Jr. also flashed in a way Eagles fans have been waiting for. He posted a sack and kept getting pressure on Titans quarterback Cam Ward, a strong outing that could be the kind of bounce-back showing the team has been hoping to see from him.
Not everyone had the same kind of day. Marcus Epps struggled in coverage and missed a tackle badly on a third-and-22 late in the game. That performance only sharpened the need for the Eagles’ safety addition.
Lemon’s stretch of quiet production continued as well. He has now gone three straight games, including the preseason, without reaching 20 receiving yards. Against Tennessee, he managed a 14-yard catch and added a -5-yard run, which did little to improve his standing.
Looking ahead, the Bears’ quarterback situation is suddenly a mess. Caleb Williams injured his hamstring and won’t practice this week, making it likely he won’t play in Week 3, though he has not been ruled out.
Tyson Bagent is also hurt and is in concussion protocol, which leaves Case Keenum as the third-string option who would start if both quarterbacks are unavailable. Keenum’s last meaningful game against the Eagles came in the 2017 NFC Championship Game with the Minnesota Vikings, a night that ended in an Eagles blowout win.
