Saquon Barkley’s night took an unsettling turn in the first quarter, and now the Eagles are waiting on answers.
The running back exited early, and sports doctor Jesse Morse raised the possibility that the issue could involve Barkley’s left shoulder or even his neck. Morse pointed to the fact that Barkley left the field under his own power, but also noted that X-rays may be in play.
"Possible left shoulder injury," Morse posted. "Here’s the play, but the injury/mechanism is not obvious.
Despite being in the red zone, Saquon headed to the locker room under his own power. It’s possible he’s getting X-rays (shoulder, neck?)."
Until the team’s medical staff sorts it out, that’s all anyone can say for sure. But if Barkley is forced to miss time, Philadelphia will have to lean harder on its depth.
That would be a rough break for Barkley, who had been looking for a strong 2026 run after a disappointing 2025 season. He was active for 16 games for the second straight year, and any absence now would end that streak.
His 2025 production - 1,140 rushing yards and seven touchdowns - was about half of what he posted in 2024. If this injury costs him games, the pressure to maximize every snap he does get only grows.
The timing is especially frustrating because the Eagles have several favorable-looking matchups coming up. Over the next few weeks, they are scheduled to face the Chicago Bears, Los Angeles Rams, Jacksonville Jaguars, Carolina Panthers, and Dallas Cowboys.
Those opponents either entered the year with defensive question marks or have recently given teams reasons to attack them. The Rams, in particular, have seen the absence of Myles Garrett raise major concerns about the defensive line.
For Barkley, every missed week means one less chance to take advantage of those matchups.
