Eagles Sign Former QB Stone Smartt to Bolster Tight End Depth

Eagles' latest addition, Stone Smartt, brings a unique quarterback-turned-tight-end skill set to an already deep position group.

The Philadelphia Eagles have bolstered their tight end lineup by signing Stone Smartt to a one-year deal. This addition brings an intriguing layer to the team, as Smartt transitions from his college days as a quarterback to a versatile NFL tight end.

Smartt's journey is nothing short of fascinating. He began his collegiate career at Northern Arizona in 2017, eventually making a name for himself as a JUCO All-America quarterback at Riverside City College.

His path then led him to Old Dominion in 2019, where he played as a quarterback before sitting out the 2020 season. In 2021, he shifted to wide receiver, showcasing his adaptability and athleticism.

His NFL journey began in 2022 when he joined the league as an undrafted rookie, converting to a tight end.

In a 2021 interview with the Daily Press of Virginia Beach, Smartt expressed his enthusiasm for his position switch, emphasizing the camaraderie within the team and his desire to contribute wherever possible. His words reflect a player eager to make an impact: “I knew with my abilities and my athleticism I want to do whatever I can to help this team win games.”

Smartt has accumulated 38 receptions for 432 yards and a touchdown in his professional career. His standout moment came in 2024 with the Chargers, recording 16 catches for 208 yards. Notably, his lone touchdown was a memorable 51-yard catch from Justin Herbert against the Packers at Lambeau Field in 2023, marking the longest touchdown by a Chargers tight end since 2013.

At 6-foot-4 and 230 pounds, Smartt is a unique blend of size and skill, straddling the line between a big wide receiver and a tight end. While blocking isn't his primary strength, his effort and determination in this area are commendable.

The Eagles have been proactive in enhancing their tight end corps, also bringing in free agent Johnny Mundt and re-signing key players like Dallas Goedert and Grant Calcaterra. With Smartt's addition, the Eagles are clearly aiming to add versatility and depth to their offensive arsenal.
