Eagles Running Back Injuries Just Put Week 6 Depth In Focus

As the Philadelphia Eagles face a pressing void in their running back lineup, Ian Wheeler brings his championship pedigree to the practice squad amid looming injury challenges.

The Philadelphia Eagles added another name to their practice squad on Tuesday, signing free agent running back Ian Wheeler as the team tries to shore up a thinned-out backfield.

Wheeler, who turned 25 in September, went undrafted out of Howard in the 2024 NFL Draft and has bounced through stops with the Chicago Bears, New Orleans Saints, Louisville Kings of the UFL, and most recently the Buffalo Bills. Buffalo released him in late August.

His strongest résumé comes from the United Football League. Wheeler was a key piece for the 2026 UFL Champion Louisville Kings and was named the 2026 UFL United Bowl MVP after helping them beat the DC Defenders 27-20.

In nine regular-season games, he ranked fourth in the UFL with 370 rushing yards on 68 carries and tied for second in rushing touchdowns with six. He also handled kick returns, finishing with 13 returns for 370 yards and a 28.5-yard average.

His 776 all-purpose yards placed him fifth in the league.

Philadelphia’s running back room is in rough shape heading into Week 6. Saquon Barkley is still working through a hamstring injury, Tank Bigsby is on injured reserve, and Will Shipley is expected to miss multiple games with a foot issue. That leaves Dameon Pierce and Carson Steele as the only backs currently on the roster.

Wheeler now joins Jaydon Blue on the practice squad as added depth at the position.

The Eagles’ updated practice squad also includes OT John Ojukwu, OL Kiran Amegadjie, OL James Brockermeyer, DB Dean Clark, WR Erik Ezukanma, WR Xavier Gipson, DT Gabe Hall, EDGE Keyshawn James-Newby, EDGE Mason Reiger, OL Xavier Truss, EDGE Joshua Weru, DT Zion Wilson, and S Cole Wisniewski.

DT Uar Bernard is on the practice squad injured list.

Nick Foles Just Added Another Layer To His Eagles Legend

Nick Foles has long occupied a special place in Eagles history, and a new detail from the Super Bowl LII run only adds to the image fans already had of him. Before the biggest game of his career, he was presented with a guaranteed endorsement opportunity from Disney, a reminder of how quickly a player on that stage can be pulled in a dozen different directions.

Foles chose not to sign, wanting nothing to interfere with his focus before the game. It fit the same steady, unbothered run that ended with him leading Philadelphia to a Super Bowl victory and taking home MVP honors, the kind of decision that only deepens the lore around a quarterback Eagles fans still talk about with reverence. Eagles Offensive Struggles Keep Pointing Back To One Offseason Miss

The Eagles spent part of their offseason searching for answers on offense, and one of the more interesting names in that process was Declan Doyle. Philadelphia interviewed multiple candidates for its offensive coordinator opening, and Doyle was among them before moving on to Baltimore, where his offense has already flashed in several statistical categories. With the Eagles still trying to find their footing through five games, the contrast only makes that missed opportunity look more significant.

Sean Mannion is the voice currently helping steer the Eagles offense, and the difference in experience and control is part of what makes the situation so noticeable. Philadelphias hiring choices are now being viewed through the lens of how the offense has performed, and Doyles success elsewhere has only sharpened the question of what might have been if the Eagles had landed him instead. Eagles Pass Rush Faces An Awkward Test Against The Star They Lost

The Eagles pass rush is about to get a familiar stress test, and it comes in the form of Jaelan Phillips, the edge rusher they once had in-house before he headed to Carolina. Philadelphia did not match the Panthers offer, and the move sent Phillips on a new path while the Eagles tried to patch the edge with Jonathan Greenard and a youth movement around the position.

The timing makes the matchup feel especially awkward for a defense that has not found the kind of steady pressure it expected. Injuries and limited production have chipped away at the rush plan, leaving the Eagles to watch a former piece of their own blueprint return to Philadelphia in a Panthers uniform with plenty of attention waiting on his every snap.
