Dameon Pierce gave the Eagles something to think about in the preseason finale, but not enough to change the bigger picture.
Philadelphia released the veteran running back on Sunday, according to ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler, doing so before the NFL’s roster cutdown deadline. The Eagles must trim from 90 players to 53 by 6 p.m. Sunday.
The move was expected. Philadelphia was never likely to keep four running backs on the roster, and Pierce’s path was blocked once he missed most of training camp with a hamstring injury. That absence gave Will Shipley the chance to lock down the RB3 job behind Saquon Barkley and Tank Bigsby.
Even so, Pierce made the most of his final audition. In Friday’s preseason finale, he ran for 44 yards on four carries and looked like the hard-charging back the Eagles had hoped to see when they signed him in March.
There is still a chance he stays in the organization. Per Fowler, the Eagles would like to bring Pierce back to the practice squad if he clears waivers.
That possibility matters because Pierce was an intriguing pickup from the start. Some believed he could push Shipley for the third spot on the depth chart, but the injury erased that opportunity before it really started.
Now entering his fifth NFL season, Pierce is trying to rebuild momentum after a career that flashed early and then stalled. A 2022 fourth-round pick, he exploded as a rookie with the Houston Texans, finishing with 939 rushing yards and four touchdowns. During that season, he also ran for 139 yards in a 29-17 loss to the Eagles.
Since then, the story has been much different. He lost his starting role to Devin Singletary in 2023, backed up Joe Mixon in 2024 and was waived by Houston last November after falling behind Nick Chubb and Woody Marks on the depth chart.
Philadelphia was a chance to reset the clock. If Pierce returns and turns heads in practice, that opportunity may not be gone yet.

The Eagles have their 53-man roster in place, but the work around the edges is still going on, and one of the most familiar names in the building is suddenly back in the conversation. Philadelphia is weighing practice-squad options, and veteran tight end Zach Ertz is among the possibilities as the team looks for help at a position that does not have much depth right now.
