Makai Lemon is back on the field, and for the Eagles rookie wide receiver, the biggest challenge wasn’t just the hamstring injury itself. It was everything he missed while he was out.
Lemon returned as a full participant in practice on Monday for the first time since Aug. 3 after sitting out nearly three weeks of training camp with a nagging hamstring issue. During that stretch, new offensive coordinator Sean Mannion was installing most of his scheme, and Lemon was losing valuable work with quarterback Jalen Hurts.
Even so, the first-round pick kept coming back to the work he could still do in his head.
The No. 20 overall pick said he expects to be ready for Week 1 of the regular season on Sept. 13. When asked directly whether he’ll be able to make an impact in the opener, Lemon answered, “Of course,”
Last week, Lemon was listed as a “limited” participant in practice and did not play in the preseason game against the New England Patriots. He did not say whether he’ll be available for Friday’s preseason finale against the Bengals.
Lemon also confirmed Monday that this was the same hamstring that bothered him during spring practices.
The Eagles traded up for Lemon in the draft, and he has been viewed as a possible WR2 alongside DeVonta Smith this season. Still, Lemon said missing that much time was “definitely tough.”
Now, he’s focused on making sure it doesn’t happen again.
“I’m real competitive,” Lemon said. “I never want to be away from this game. So me knowing that it’s the hamstring again, it’s about making sure I’m taking the right precautions and I’m learning from it so it don’t happen again.”

Eagles Suddenly Have A Real Roster Battle Fans Should Watch
Kapena Gushiken has done a lot to make himself part of the conversation this summer, and not just because he arrived as an undrafted rookie. Through training camp and the preseason, he has shown enough versatility to work at both safety and cornerback, a useful trait on a roster that always values defensive backs who can do a little bit of everything.
The timing has only helped his case. With J.T. Gray released and Tariq Casto-Fields dealing with an injury, the Eagles suddenly have a real opening in the secondary, and Gushiken is right in the middle of the backup safety competition behind the starters. For a player fighting to stick, this is exactly the kind of late-summer opportunity that can change a roster decision. [Read more 🡒]
Eagles Suddenly Have A New RB Question After Frightening Injury
The Eagles had to move quickly at running back after JaQuinden Jackson suffered a serious injury in a game and was taken off the field by ambulance. Philadelphia waived Jackson with an injury designation, a step that points to a likely return to the injured reserve list, and filled the opening by bringing in Jordan Mims on a short-term deal.
Mims now joins the 90-man roster and enters a position battle that is about more than just one emergency signing. For a team always looking to sort out depth behind its top backs, the next few days will help determine whether he sticks around long enough to push for a practice squad spot. [Read more 🡒]
Eagles Face Tough 53-Man Calls With Several Bubble Spots Still Open
The Eagles are heading into one of the most difficult stretches of the preseason, with Sundays 6 p.m. deadline forcing the front office to trim the roster from 90 players down to 53. With several spots still unsettled, the focus has shifted to the edge cases: veterans trying to hang on, younger players trying to prove they belong, and a handful of names whose camp showings have kept them in the conversation longer than expected.
Among the players still in the mix are Johnson, Chance Campbell and Cameron Latu, each of whom has shown enough to merit a look but not enough to feel completely safe. The Eagles have some near-locks elsewhere on the roster, but the final decisions will still come down to fit, special teams value and how much upside the staff believes is worth carrying into the season.
