Makai Lemon’s first real statement game in an Eagles uniform could come against the team that once looked like his most obvious NFL landing spot.
Philadelphia hosts the Rams on Sunday at Lincoln Financial Field, and the timing has opened a door for the rookie wideout. DeVonta Smith is expected to miss the Week 4 matchup, per ESPN, which could push more of the passing-game burden onto a receiver group that already has a few moving parts. Dontayvion Wicks has been the Eagles’ WR2 through three games, but with Dallas Goedert nursing a knee injury and Hollywood Brown’s status also in doubt, Philadelphia may need Lemon to help create some offense.
That’s the kind of opportunity the Eagles had in mind when they traded up from No. 23 to No. 20 to take him in the first round.
Lemon was widely projected to wind up with Los Angeles in the 2026 NFL draft, and the Rams did plenty of work on him along the way. They reportedly had a formal meeting with him at the Scouting Combine and brought a heavy presence to the Biletnikoff Award winner’s pro day in Los Angeles. Many draft analysts viewed the USC star as a clean fit for Sean McVay’s offense, especially with Davante Adams’ contract expiring after this season and Puka Nakua already in place.
Instead, the Rams took Alabama quarterback Ty Simpson with the No. 13 overall pick, choosing a Matthew Stafford successor over another receiver. Lemon slid further, and the Eagles pounced after A.J. Brown was on his way out the door and Philadelphia needed help.
The early returns have been slow. Lemon missed most of OTAs and training camp with a hamstring injury, and through three games he has not yet made the kind of splash some fans expected from the 22-year-old who piled up 1,156 receiving yards from the slot at USC a year ago. In Weeks 1 and 2, he caught four passes on five targets for nine yards, with much of his work coming on screen and swing looks that never really got going.
But Monday night against the Chicago Bears offered a better glimpse of what he can bring. Lemon still had one screen blown up for a three-yard loss, but he also hauled in catches of 19 and 13 yards. The separation ability and toughness after the catch that made him attractive to both the Eagles and Rams showed up a little more clearly.
Offensive coordinator Sean Mannion thinks the rookie is trending the right way.
“He’s an exciting, young player whose confidence is growing each day,” Mannion said Thursday. “He works his tail off. ... We continue to be very excited about what he’s shown.”
Mannion added: “Makai has been doing a great job for us. He’s really doing everything we’re asking him to do,” Mannion said.
“Even on the routes where he’s not getting the ball, you can see the talent. You can see him winning, separating.”
That’s the kind of progress Philadelphia will need if Smith sits and the offense has to lean on a younger group for a spark. And with the Rams coming to town, the matchup carries an extra layer.
Lemon was once viewed as a potential long-term answer in Los Angeles. Now, the Eagles are hoping the first-round pick can make his first real breakthrough against the team that nearly drafted him.

Eagles Passing Game Faces A Major Rams Test Without A Star Receiver
The Eagles head into their matchup with the Rams already short on one of Jalen Hurts most trusted targets, with DeVonta Smith not expected to play because of a hamstring injury. Smith has not practiced this week, and the timing is less than ideal for a passing game that has leaned on his route-running and ability to separate when the offense needs a stabilizing catch.
Philadelphia is planning to move forward with Dontayvion Wicks, Makai Lemon and Darius Cooper at wide receiver, while Hollywood Brown remains out with an ankle injury. That leaves the Eagles trying to piece together a workable passing attack against a Rams defense that can force quarterbacks to be precise, and it puts even more pressure on the rest of the receiver room to create answers quickly. Eagles Injuries Could Finally Open The Door For Darius Cooper
The Eagles head into Week 4 dealing with a receiver situation that could force some reshuffling against the Los Angeles Rams. With DeVonta Smith and Hollywood Brown both banged up, Philadelphia may need to lean deeper into the roster, and that has put Darius Cooper in a more interesting spot than he has been in most weeks.
Cooper has already carved out a role on special teams, and he also came through with a game-winning touchdown earlier this season, giving the staff at least one reason to trust him if the offense needs another option. Even so, Makai Lemon is expected to start, so any larger opportunity for Cooper may hinge on how much the Eagles can ask of a receiver group that is suddenly thinner than planned. [Read more 🡒]
Eagles May Be Forced Into A Risky Linebacker Plan Vs Rams
Zack Baun is still in concussion protocol and has not practiced, which leaves the Eagles in a familiar but uncomfortable spot heading into Week 4 against the Rams. If Baun cannot go, Philadelphia appears headed toward a starting linebacker duo of Jihaad Campbell and Jeremiah Trotter Jr., a pairing that would put even more pressure on a defense already trying to manage a tough matchup.
Vic Fangio is expected to respond by leaning on coverage adjustments to help those linebackers out, a sign the Eagles may need to protect the middle of the field as much as they attack it. Campbells tackling has already drawn attention, while Trotters preseason work suggested he could handle a larger role, but the Rams are the kind of opponent that can expose any hesitation in a young linebacking group.
