The Philadelphia Eagles have had their fair share of offseason shakeups, but nothing quite sent a jolt through the fanbase like the uncertainty around defensive coordinator Vic Fangio’s future. For a team already revamping its offensive staff - including bringing in Sean Mannion as the new offensive coordinator - the possibility of losing Fangio had nerves fraying across Philly.
According to reports, Fangio had informed the team he was considering retirement this offseason. That prompted the Eagles’ front office to step in and convince the veteran coach to give it one more go in 2026. And based on how key players are reacting, that decision is being met with open arms inside the locker room.
Cornerback Cooper DeJean, who’s quickly become one of the league’s premier defensive backs under Fangio’s tutelage, didn’t hide his relief when asked about the news.
“I’m glad he’s coming back,” DeJean said during Super Bowl week. “I still think he’s having a lot of fun doing it.
He seems like he’s having a lot of fun. So, yeah, I’m happy he’s back.”
And why wouldn’t he be? DeJean’s rise has mirrored the success of Fangio’s defense.
Over the past two seasons, the Eagles have ranked top 13 in both yards allowed and points allowed - a testament to the system Fangio has installed and the discipline he demands from his units. His impact was especially felt during the team’s 2024 Super Bowl run, when the defense played a pivotal role in securing the title.
In 2025, even amid offensive inconsistencies, Fangio’s group held the line, helping the Eagles reach the postseason once again.
For DeJean, Fangio’s return means continuity - and another year to build on what’s already been an impressive start to his NFL career. Just two seasons in, DeJean has already earned a Pro Bowl nod and a First-Team All-Pro selection. He and fellow corner Quinyon Mitchell formed one of the most formidable duos in the league last season, and that chemistry only gets stronger with Fangio still calling the shots.
But while 2026 brings some short-term clarity, there’s still a looming question about what happens after this season. Fangio’s retirement talk hasn’t gone away, and there’s a very real chance that 2027 could mark a turning point for the defense - not just in terms of leadership, but in identity.
That puts some urgency on this offseason. While the offensive staff gets reshaped, the defensive side needs to be built with staying power. If this is indeed Fangio’s final ride, the Eagles will need to ensure the foundation he’s laid can endure beyond his tenure.
For now, though, the Eagles can breathe a little easier. Fangio is back.
DeJean is thriving. And the defense that helped bring a Lombardi Trophy to Philly just two years ago remains in capable hands - at least for one more season.
