Eagles Reunion Buzz Ends With Familiar Starter Joining An NFC Rival

Despite former Eagles lineman Mekhi Becton's openness to return, he opts for a fresh start with the Packers, causing a stir among fans.

Mekhi Becton won a Super Bowl ring in Philadelphia, drew plenty of buzz about a possible return, and still ended up heading elsewhere.

On Monday, Becton agreed to sign with the Green Bay Packers, according to FOX Sports’ Jordan Schultz. That shuts the door on a reunion with the Eagles, even though some fans had been pushing for general manager Howie Roseman to bring him back.

Becton had spent the summer as a free agent and had been close to a deal with the Pittsburgh Steelers. Instead, he’ll get a shot to start in Green Bay.

The Eagles’ interest from the fan base came after some uneven play up front just two weeks into the season. In Week 1, left guard Landon Dickerson called himself a “liability” while playing hurt before landing on injured reserve, which forced Philadelphia to shuffle its line.

A week later, Cam Jurgens slid to left guard and Drew Kendall took over at center. Kendall held up well, but Jurgens had his struggles at times.

That fueled speculation, including chatter that went back to the offseason, that Roseman could turn back to Becton. The logic was easy to follow: he had been one of Philadelphia’s success stories in 2024.

Becton started 15 games at guard during the Eagles’ Super Bowl LIX run, helping protect Jalen Hurts and opening lanes for Saquon Barkley’s record-setting season. Once viewed as a first-round bust with the New York Jets at tackle, he was rebuilt into a productive piece by former Eagles offensive line coach Jeff Stoutland.

After that season, Becton signed a two-year, $20 million deal with the Los Angeles Chargers. But he was cut after a subpar 2025 season and became a free agent again.

Even this summer, the idea of a return lingered. Becton was asked by an Eagles fan when he’s “coming home” to Philadelphia.

Instead, it was Green Bay that got the answer.

Eagles Legend Brian Dawkins Is Suddenly At Center Of NFL Fight

Brian Dawkins has been a standard-bearer for the Eagles for years, but this time his name has landed in a very different kind of spotlight. The NFL has formally asked the Department of Homeland Security to take down a video that used game footage of Dawkins without permission, after the clip was posted in response to claims about a migrant caravan. Neither the league nor the Eagles authorized the footage, making the use of one of Philadelphias most beloved players a flashpoint beyond the usual bounds of football.

Dawkins also said he did not consent to the use of his name, image or likeness, adding another layer to a situation that has moved quickly from social media controversy to a broader rights dispute. For Eagles fans, it is a jarring reminder that even a franchise icon can get pulled into political messaging without warning, and the question now is how far this fight goes once the NFL has already stepped in. Jalen Hurts Opens Up About The Scary Eagles Evaluation Monday Night

Jalen Hurts spent Monday night taking ownership of the Eagles uneven showing against the Chicago Bears, and the conversation after the game was just as revealing as the performance itself. The quarterback said he was accountable for the teams struggles on both sides of the ball, while also addressing the possible concussion that forced him through the leagues protocol and added another layer of concern to an already messy night.

Hurts also looked back on a handful of pivotal moments, including a touchdown attempt, a punt decision and the interception that helped define the evening. Even with the frustration, he sounded confident in the teams process and focused on the bigger picture, saying the Eagles need to learn from the game and keep building continuity as they move forward. Eagles Draft Gamble Could Look Worse As Secondary Concerns Keep Growing

The Eagles paid a real price to move up and take Makai Lemon, sending away two fourth-round picks in the process, and the ripple effect of that decision is getting harder to ignore. One of the players available in that range, safety Genesis Smith, landed with the Chargers, where he has already flashed early in his career and even picked off Josh Allen twice in a recent game.

For Philadelphia, the issue is less about one missed name than the broader roster picture. The secondary has been under pressure defensively, and every mid-round pick given up to chase a preferred target tightens the margin for fixing problems that are still staring the Eagles in the face.
