Eagles Quarterback Depth Just Took Another Sudden Turn

The Eagles make a strategic move to bolster their quarterback lineup amid Jalen Hurts' unexpected sideline stint with a recent signing from the Cowboys.

With Jalen Hurts sidelined by a blood clot in his calf, the Eagles are moving quickly for another quarterback, signing Joe Milton away from the Cowboys’ practice squad and adding him to the 53-man roster, a league source confirmed to NBC Sports Philadelphia.

The move, first reported Friday morning by NFL reporter Jordan Schultz, gives Philadelphia another arm at a position that suddenly looks a lot thinner. Hurts has already been ruled out for Week 6 against the Panthers, and there’s still no clear timetable for when he might be able to return. For now, fourth-year quarterback Tanner McKee is set to start against Carolina, while the Eagles also have fifth-round rookie Cole Payton on the roster.

Milton enters the picture after a rocky stretch of quarterback turnover for Philadelphia. The Eagles opened the season with Andy Dalton as Hurts’ backup after Dalton beat out McKee in training camp.

But Dalton’s one-pass stint in Week 3 against the Bears ended with an interception, and that led to him being demoted the next week and eventually released. There had been talk that Dalton could end up back on the Eagles’ practice squad, but that never materialized.

Now the Eagles are taking a look at Milton, a 26-year-old who was drafted by the Patriots in the sixth round, No. 193 overall, out of Tennessee in the 2024 draft. In five games of NFL action, with no starts, he has completed 69.8% of his passes for 424 yards with 2 touchdowns and 2 interceptions.

At 6-5 and 236 pounds, Milton stands out immediately for his size and physical tools. He was also a Day 3 pick for a reason, and development remains the big question. NFL.com’s Lance Zierlein put it this way in the 2024 pre-draft process:

“Rare physical specimen with the proverbial ‘arm talent to make all the NFL throws,’ but he's prevented from doing so by a lack of timing, accuracy and touch. Milton is gifted with a cannon for a right arm and can throw the ball as hard or as far as you want.

His fastballs are often inaccurate and difficult to catch for moving targets, and he was wildly inconsistent locating his deep throws. He can elude pressure, extend plays and put jaw-dropping highlights on tape, but he's never been able to mature his game from splashy to consistent.

He's primarily a single-side reader who struggles to improvise with his eyes. The physical ingredients could get him drafted on Day 3, but his lack of development over six seasons discourages his projection.”

Nick Foles Just Added Another Layer To His Eagles Legend

Nick Foles has long occupied a special place in Eagles history, and a new detail from the Super Bowl LII run only adds to the image fans already had of him. Before the biggest game of his career, he was presented with a guaranteed endorsement opportunity from Disney, a reminder of how quickly a player on that stage can be pulled in a dozen different directions.

Foles chose not to sign, wanting nothing to interfere with his focus before the game. It fit the same steady, unbothered run that ended with him leading Philadelphia to a Super Bowl victory and taking home MVP honors, the kind of decision that only deepens the lore around a quarterback Eagles fans still talk about with reverence. Eagles Offensive Struggles Keep Pointing Back To One Offseason Miss

The Eagles spent part of their offseason searching for answers on offense, and one of the more interesting names in that process was Declan Doyle. Philadelphia interviewed multiple candidates for its offensive coordinator opening, and Doyle was among them before moving on to Baltimore, where his offense has already flashed in several statistical categories. With the Eagles still trying to find their footing through five games, the contrast only makes that missed opportunity look more significant.

Sean Mannion is the voice currently helping steer the Eagles offense, and the difference in experience and control is part of what makes the situation so noticeable. Philadelphias hiring choices are now being viewed through the lens of how the offense has performed, and Doyles success elsewhere has only sharpened the question of what might have been if the Eagles had landed him instead. Eagles Pass Rush Faces An Awkward Test Against The Star They Lost

The Eagles pass rush is about to get a familiar stress test, and it comes in the form of Jaelan Phillips, the edge rusher they once had in-house before he headed to Carolina. Philadelphia did not match the Panthers offer, and the move sent Phillips on a new path while the Eagles tried to patch the edge with Jonathan Greenard and a youth movement around the position.

The timing makes the matchup feel especially awkward for a defense that has not found the kind of steady pressure it expected. Injuries and limited production have chipped away at the rush plan, leaving the Eagles to watch a former piece of their own blueprint return to Philadelphia in a Panthers uniform with plenty of attention waiting on his every snap.
