Eagles Quarterback Depth Just Took A Turn Fans Wont Love

As the Eagles navigate quarterback turmoil, veteran Andy Dalton turns down their return offer, leaving Philadelphia to rely on unproven talent.

The Eagles did not end up getting the quarterback they reportedly wanted back.

After Jalen Hurts’ blood clot situation forced Philadelphia to add depth at the position, the team signed Joe Milton III off the Dallas Cowboys’ practice squad last week. But Milton III was not the first option. According to a report from Pro Football Talk, the Eagles tried to bring Andy Dalton back to Philadelphia, and Dalton “politely declined.”

Dalton opened the 2026 season as Philly’s No. 2 quarterback behind Hurts, but that stay at the top of the depth chart didn’t last long. He was dropped to No. 3 after throwing an interception on his only pass attempt as an Eagle, and the team released him on the Friday before its Week 5 game. Even then, there was talk that he could return.

Now, though, Dalton is reportedly moving on. PFT says he will join a new team “as soon as tomorrow.”

That leaves Philadelphia in a very different spot than it imagined when it first turned to the veteran. Dalton, who turns 39 later this month, reportedly looked physically diminished during offseason practices and preseason games.

And with the Eagles possibly facing a lost season, there isn’t much upside in forcing a reunion anyway. He’s not the kind of quarterback who changes the short-term outlook, and there’s no long-term value to chase there either.

In Week 6, the Eagles had rookie Cole Payton as their No. 2 quarterback and Milton III as the emergency third option. Neither is a polished answer for the future, but there is at least some intrigue there. If either one gets a real chance, it’ll be worth watching.

Eagles Fans Suddenly Have Real Reason To Watch Shane Steichen

The Colts decision to fire general manager Chris Ballard after a sluggish start has inevitably put Shane Steichen back in the spotlight, and for Eagles fans, it is a familiar one. Steichen spent two seasons as Philadelphias offensive coordinator in 2021-22, when the offense grew into one of the leagues most dangerous units, and he has spent the last four years trying to steady things in Indianapolis as head coach.

Steichens overall record there sits at 27-30, and with the Colts now resetting in the front office, his future is suddenly a talking point again. If Indianapolis eventually makes a bigger change, Philadelphia would be a natural place to wonder about a reunion, especially with the Eagles still searching for answers on offense and the old connection to Steichen never far from the surface. Eagles Week 7 Showdown Could Change Who Survives This Collapse

The Eagles season has already veered into survival mode, and the next stretch figures to tell a lot about who, if anyone, gets to keep their footing once the losses stop piling up. At 2-4 and in the middle of a four-game skid, Philadelphia has seen the margin for error shrink fast, with a number of familiar faces suddenly under the microscope as the frustration around the roster and coaching staff keeps growing.

Saquon Barkley, Landon Dickerson, Offensive Coordinator Sean Mannion and Head Coach Nick Sirianni are all part of the conversation now, because a collapsing season tends to turn every week into a referendum. Week 7 looms as the kind of checkpoint that can change the tone around the building, and for some in the organization, it may also change how long their jobs are safe. [Read more 🡒]

Cowboys Suddenly Have A Real Opening In The NFC East

The NFC East has spent the last couple of weeks looking anything but sturdy, with all four teams hitting the kind of rough patch that makes every divisional game feel bigger than usual. The latest reminder came in the form of a tie between Washington and New York, a result that only added to the sense that nobody in this group is seizing control. Dallas, sitting at 2-4, has at least kept itself in the mix, and the standings have left the Cowboys with a real path to move up if things break their way.

Philadelphia enters the matchup dealing with a major setback at quarterback, which only sharpens the stakes for a Cowboys team trying to take advantage of the moment. The Giants are technically on top for now, but their own issues are piling up, including the loss of Jaxson Dart and a tough date with the Texans ahead. In a division this messy, even one good night can shift the picture quickly, and Dallas suddenly has a chance to make the most of it. [Read more 🡒]
