Eagles Passing Game Faces A Real Test Against The Rams

The Eagles gear up for Week 4 by placing their trust in the rising talent of Dontayvion Wicks to lead their receiving corps against the Rams.

With DeVonta Smith sidelined by a hamstring issue, the Eagles are asking Dontayvion Wicks to move from dependable secondary option to the guy the offense leans on first.

Through the first three games, Wicks has already shown he can handle a major role. Now he gets the chance to prove he can carry the load as the Eagles head into Sunday’s matchup with the Rams without Smith and Hollywood Brown, who is dealing with an ankle injury.

“We’re prepared. It’s next man up,” Wicks said this week.

“When you get to practice and get the reps in with the other guys out there, we’re ready for everybody to step up. You know, it’s football.

You that those times show up, come up during seasons. It’s a long season.

So some weeks you might not have guys out there. But we’re just going with it and however it play out, we’re going to be ready.”

The Eagles will have Wicks, Makai Lemon, Darius Cooper, Elijah Moore and Britain Covey available at receiver on Sunday, and the shape of the game plan starts with how Wicks handles the jump to WR1.

That trust isn’t coming out of nowhere. The coaching staff came away from practice this week impressed by how Wicks looked in the top spot, and the organization has believed in him for a while.

Lemon put it simply: “He can do everything really,” Makai Lemon said of Wicks. “He’s one of the guys we count on in this offense.

He can do everything.”

Smith’s absence matters because he has been the focal point of the passing game. According to NFL NextGen Stats, his 32.9% target share ranks second among all NFL receivers, trailing only Jaxon Smith-Njigba at 37.9%. Losing that kind of volume against a Rams team sitting at 1-2 and desperate for a win forces the Eagles to reshuffle fast.

Nick Sirainni said the process is about adjusting to what the roster can still do and plugging the right players into the right spots.

“You go through it, and you think about the things that you do well and that your guys do well,” head coach Nick Sirainni said. “You think about the defense that you're playing and the things that you have to do there and you put guys in positions -- it's, 'OK, we're running a play that Smitty might be good at and he's the first reader,' whatever it is. Then you say, 'Hey, this play is still good and who's the guy that should go in for that situation?'

“That's kind of how it goes of when you're getting ready for anything like that. You do that a lot.

There's guys that are questionable all week that you do that with and you have backup and contingency plans and all those different things. So again, it's just part of our process of what we do on a weekly basis.”

For the Eagles, this is a different kind of receiver problem than they’ve had in recent years. They spent four seasons with A.J.

Brown and Smith giving them two true No. 1 options, which meant the offense always had another star to fall back on when one missed time. That safety net isn’t as obvious now, but the team’s confidence in Wicks has been clear from the start.

Through three weeks, Wicks has been targeted 15 times and has 9 catches for 179 yards and a touchdown. He’s second on the team in targets, catches and receiving yards, and while it’s still early, the trade that brought him over from Green Bay is looking like a strong move.

The Eagles are likely to feature Wicks, Lemon and Cooper the most, with Moore also expected to rotate in more often. Lemon has already been playing heavily as the slot receiver, and Cooper and Moore should both see their workloads rise with Smith out.

“We feel like everyone's capable of shouldering that burden,” offensive coordinator Sean Mannion said this week. “Wicks has been doing a ton of great stuff.

Makai's been doing a ton of great stuff. You look across the board at multiple different position groups.

We feel confident in our depth across the board, and they're going to step up to really help us continue to grow and improve as an offense.”

Lemon’s numbers haven’t jumped off the page yet. The USC first-round pick has only 7 catches for 38 yards, though that hasn’t been all on him, with the Eagles trying to force-feed him on screens that haven’t worked. When he’s been used as a route runner and a catcher, he’s looked solid.

That’s why this week matters for him, too. If the Eagles can keep leaning into what Lemon does best, they may start unlocking more from him.

“Makai is nice,” Wicks said. “Results don’t always show up how everybody think they will so early.

But he’s doing the right things, he’s stacking days. I see him every day get better every day.

That’s a plus when you see that from a young guy. Remembering when I came in, the focal point was to stack days and get better every day.

I see that from him. Him just gaining that confidence and also building that trust with 1, it’s big.”

Lane Johnson Update Leaves Eagles Fans With A Bigger Concern

Lane Johnson will sit out the upcoming game against the Los Angeles Rams because of a personal matter, leaving the Eagles without one of their most important and most reliable pieces on the offensive line. For a team that leans so heavily on stability up front, any absence from Johnson carries weight, especially given how central he has been to Philadelphias run in recent seasons.

Johnsons status also comes with a larger long-term backdrop after he announced plans to retire following the 2026 NFL season. He already dealt with a Lisfranc injury that cost him part of last season, so even a short-term update like this tends to invite bigger questions about what comes next for an aging cornerstone in the middle of another demanding year. Eagles Just Sent A Troubling Message About Their Backup Quarterback Spot

The Eagles are making a change behind Jalen Hurts, with Tanner McKee set to replace Andy Dalton as the backup quarterback for the game against the Los Angeles Rams, according to NFL Networks Mike Garafolo. The move comes after Dalton threw an interception in a recent game and after coaches offered mixed signals about how they feel about the depth of the quarterback room.

McKee, a sixth-round pick in 2023, has already shown enough in limited action to stay in the conversation. He has started two career games and owns a 99.5 passer rating, which gives Philadelphia a different look at a spot that suddenly feels worth watching a lot more closely. [Read more 🡒]

Saquon Barkleys Latest Injury Leaves Eagles Facing A Bigger Concern

Saquon Barkleys latest setback arrived during the game against the Los Angeles Rams, when a hamstring injury forced the Eagles to take him out for the rest of the afternoon. Philadelphia had already been managing his workload after he missed most of Week 2 with a stinger, and the timing only adds to the concern around a backfield that was built to lean on him early and often.

Tank Bigsby stepped in after Barkley exited, with Will Shipley also picking up snaps as the Eagles tried to piece together the running game on the fly. Barkley has still produced 174 rushing yards through the first four weeks, but the bigger worry now is whether this is becoming a pattern rather than a one-off, and how long Philadelphia can keep its ground game on track if he keeps getting dinged up.
