The Eagles’ Week 1 matchup against Washington just got a lot more favorable up front. The Commanders are expected to be without starting left tackle Laremy Tunsil, who suffered a torn triceps injury Saturday morning and is reportedly set to miss “ at least a significant portion of the regular season.”
That’s a major blow for Washington, and it likely means Tunsil won’t be available for either meeting with Philadelphia this year. The teams are also scheduled to face off again in Week 8, and the Eagles will get both shots without one of the Commanders’ top blockers.
Tunsil’s absence hits even harder because of what he means to the roster. He’s one of the best players on the Commanders, and earlier this year he signed a contract extension that made him the NFL’s highest-paid offensive lineman on an annual basis.
Washington has already started sorting through the options. Reserve offensive lineman Andrew Wylie stepped in at left tackle after Tunsil left practice, but he’s not viewed as the answer there.
Brandon Coleman looks like the most likely short-term replacement. He had been battling Chris Paul for the starting left guard job, but he may now be the best fit to slide outside. Coleman made 12 starts at left tackle in 2024, before Washington traded for Tunsil in the 2025 offseason, and he has 15 starts there over the last two years.
The Commanders will watch how Coleman handles the spot before deciding whether they need to go outside the building for more help.
There was also mention of 2025 first-round pick Josh Conerly possibly moving from right tackle to the left side, where he played at Oregon.
However Washington handles it, this is a significant loss. And with the Eagles’ defensive line looking strong in training camp, Philly has a real chance to capitalize on Tunsil’s absence.

Ty Robinson has spent the spring and summer doing what young defensive linemen in Philadelphia have to do if they want real attention: keep showing up in the right places and holding their own against the starters. After a quiet rookie season in which he got into 11 games and chipped in a few disruptive plays, the second-year lineman has looked more confident in OTAs and training camp, enough to start working with the first unit and draw notice in one-on-one work.
The timing matters for the Eagles, too. Jalen Carter and Jordan Davis are already locked in as part of the front, but the rest of the rotation is less settled, and any uncertainty around the depth chart only gives Robinson more of a lane to push through. For a team that values keeping its defensive line deep and young, this kind of summer climb can turn into something more meaningful once the pads stay on and the roster starts to take shape.
