The Eagles’ new-look offense has stumbled out of the gate, and the most glaring problem is showing up on the very first snap of a series. On first down, they have been a mess.
Through two games, Philadelphia ranks 28th in EPA per play, 31st in both yards per play and success rate, and has managed a first down on first down only twice - the fewest in the league. Even that number comes with a wrinkle: neither of those conversions came on 1st and 10. Darius Cooper’s 23-yard catch against the Titans came on 1st and 17 in the fourth quarter, and his touchdown came on 1st and goal from the 3.
The inefficiency is spread across the board. On 48 first downs, the Eagles have failed to gain yardage on 18 of them.
They have as many negative plays on first down as they do plays that gained 7 or more yards, with nine in each bucket. That has left them facing 8.7 yards to go on second down on average, which ranks 26th this season.
The run game hasn’t provided any relief. Philadelphia is running 65% of the time on first down, but the results have been ugly: 24th in EPA per play, 27th in success rate and 28th in yards per carry. And when the Eagles do throw, the ball is coming out short.
That part of the story is not about Jalen Hurts. He had the 5th highest air yards per attempt on 1st down in 2025, and 14th in 2024.
It’s not an AJ Brown problem either, since Brown was 48th in air yards per target last season. Nor does it become a Dontayvion Wicks issue, because he was 56th.
Two games is still a tiny sample, but the Commanders game alone doesn’t explain this away. The Eagles failed to gain a single first down on first down in that game, and against the Titans they converted just 2 of 28 first downs on first down, a 7.1% rate.
If that same rate held over the full sample, they would still be dead last in first-down conversion rate on first down. The Steelers are next worst at 7.4%.
What’s left points to the offensive line and the coaching. Philadelphia is 19th in sack rate per play and 28th in pressures per play.
Short throws are usually the easy fix when protection is shaky, but the Eagles are already leaning into that approach on first down and still getting nowhere. Even Cooper’s 23-yard gain came on a pass caught 5 yards beyond the line of scrimmage, though it wasn’t Hurts’ first read and did show solid progression.
The line has already been shuffled, too. Moving Cam Jurgens, who co-leads the league in holding penalties, to guard did not solve the problem. Maybe time will help the group settle in, but in-season line overhauls rarely turn into clean answers.
Two games can feel small. In the NFL, they aren’t. Two games can tilt a season, and right now the Eagles offense is already in trouble.

Through the first two games, Wicks has caught seven passes for 147 yards and a touchdown, production that has already helped him earn Jalen Hurts trust.
