Dontayvion Wicks is wasting no time carving out a real role for the Eagles.
When Philadelphia brought him in, the move looked like it might be about depth and a WR3 spot. Two games into the season, though, Wicks has already pushed that idea aside. He’s not just filling snaps - he’s becoming a trusted piece of the offense.
The fit with Jalen Hurts has shown up quickly, even with this being their first year together. Wicks has looked comfortable, and the Eagles have leaned on him more than a typical add-on receiver. That’s especially notable with the uncertainty around the rest of the pass-catching group behind DeVonta Smith.
Against the Titans, Wicks finished with five catches for 74 receiving yards on six targets, both second on the team behind Smith. It was also a game in which Dallas Goedert (knee) and Saquon Barkley (stinger) both were dealing with injuries and left the contest, which opened the door for Wicks to step up.
He didn’t just take advantage in general. He delivered when the Eagles needed it most.
Devin Jackson of the Philadelphia Inquirer reported that Wicks was targeted five times on third and fourth down, and he caught all five for five first downs, per NextGen Stats. Jackson also noted that those receptions produced a +11.8 EPA for Philadelphia, the fifth-most of any receiver in the last two years.
That kind of production on money downs is how a receiver earns trust fast.
Wicks has now posted 70-plus receiving yards in back-to-back weeks, and the momentum is building. Makai Lemon still appears to need more time to settle in after missing training camp, so Wicks has given the Eagles a reliable answer while the rookie gets up to speed.
That matters because defenses are naturally going to focus on Smith, Barkley, and Goedert. If Wicks keeps winning against CB2 and CB3 looks, he can keep turning those opportunities into chain-moving plays.
The numbers back up what’s showing on the field, too. Jeff Kerr of Eagles on SI reported that Hurts owns a 145.8 passer rating when targeting Wicks in 2026.
It’s still early, and the Eagles aren’t going to crown anyone after two games. But Wicks has already done enough to make the point: he’s more than a depth piece. He looks like a real weapon in this offense, and his performance against the Titans only strengthened that case.

If the injury lingers, Philadelphia may have to look at adding help, either by promoting a backup into a larger role or exploring the trade market for another tight end to stabilize the offense while it waits for clarity.
