Eagles Make Desperate QB Change With Season Slipping Away

The Philadelphia Eagles are making bold moves to shake up their season by naming Joe Milton III as their new starting quarterback in a bid for revival.

The Philadelphia Eagles are making another quarterback switch, and this one feels like a last-ditch swing at keeping the season alive. Joe Milton III is set to start in Week 9 against the New York Giants, ending the Tanner McKee run under center.

NFL insiders Adam Schefter and Mike Garafolo reported that the Eagles are turning to Milton for what will be the first start of his NFL career. McKee had opened the last three games, but Philadelphia went 0-3 in that stretch. He completed 63.2% of his passes for 638 yards, two touchdowns, and two interceptions during that run.

For the Eagles, this is now the fourth quarterback to take the field this season and the third different starter. That alone tells the story: the team is searching for anything that can shake loose a stagnant offense.

Milton brings a different profile entirely. In six career NFL games with the New England Patriots and Dallas Cowboys, he has completed 69.8% of his passes for 424 yards and two touchdowns and two interceptions. He has also added 66 rushing yards on 15 carries and one score on the ground.

The appeal starts with the arm. McKee’s longest completion this year was 34 yards, and that came on a 10- to 15-yard throw to rookie Eli Stowers late in the Week 8 loss to the Washington Commanders, with Stowers doing the rest of the work after the catch. Milton gives Philadelphia a chance to actually threaten teams vertically.

That matters for a receiving group that includes Makai Lemon, Darius Cooper, and Hollywood Brown, all of whom can stretch the field if the ball is delivered with enough juice. If DeVonta Smith and Dontayvion Wicks are healthy enough, they would sit at the top of that list and stand to gain the most from Milton’s arrival.

Milton’s mobility is the other big reason this move makes sense. Philadelphia’s offensive line gave up five sacks in the 27-10 loss to Washington in Week 8, and a quarterback who can move changes the equation. It also could help a running game that has been uneven while Saquon Barkley has dealt with hamstring and back injuries that have kept him in and out of games.

Offensive coordinator Sean Mannion should have more freedom with Milton than he did while trying to keep the quarterback boxed in. The Eagles can lean more into RPO concepts, use more play-action, and let Milton roll out and throw on the move.

The bigger picture is simple. At 2-6, Philadelphia does not have much reason to play it safe against the Giants.

The season is already hanging by a thread, so the Eagles are betting on creativity, pace, and Milton’s physical tools to spark something. Maybe it buys them hope.

Maybe it just gives them a different look. Either way, the change is here.

Eagles Deadline Could Force Painful Decisions On Familiar Faces

The Eagles are heading toward the NFL trade deadline in a far different place than anyone in Philadelphia expected, sitting at 2-6 and mired in a six-game losing streak. With the roster suddenly looking more vulnerable than it has in years, the front office is being forced to weigh not just what can help right now, but what might need to be moved to address glaring holes elsewhere on the roster.

The biggest pressure points remain easy to spot, especially on the offensive line and at safety, and that has made the conversation around possible trades more uncomfortable than usual. Dallas Goedert and Hollywood Brown are among the names being floated as possible candidates, while the status of other familiar pieces has only added to the sense that this deadline could bring a difficult shakeup for a team trying to stop its slide. Eagles May Be Learning Something Important About Tanner McKee

Since Jalen Hurts 2026 season ended before Week 6, Tanner McKee has been thrust into the kind of role the Eagles never expected to need this soon, and the early returns have given the coaching staff something to evaluate beyond just wins and losses. Offensive coordinator Sean Mannion has liked what he has seen from McKee over his last three starts, especially the way the quarterback has handled the offense as the games have piled up.

The more interesting part for Philadelphia is how steady McKee has looked while settling into the job. His passing production has been consistent from one start to the next, with similar output in the air and a comparable touchdown-to-interception profile, which suggests the Eagles may be getting a better sense of what he can be if they need him to keep steering the offense. Nick Sirianni Just Reframed A Costly Eagles Protection Breakdown

A protection bust in the recent game looked ugly in real time, with a Washington defender slipping past Landon Dickerson for a sack on Tanner McKee, but Nick Sirianni spent part of his latest comments trying to put the play in a broader context. The Eagles coach said the issue was tied to the kind of coordination work that happens before the snap, where one missed detail can unravel an entire rep, especially when the offense is adjusting at the line.

For Philadelphia, the important part is less about assigning blame than understanding how quickly a small communication error can turn into a hit on the quarterback. Sirianni emphasized that these breakdowns come from the whole operation not being in sync, which is exactly why the Eagles lean so heavily on communication and teamwork to keep protection clean when the defense starts moving things around.
