Eagles Linked to Major South Beach Move to Fix Secondary

Howie Roseman eyes a blockbuster deal with the Dolphins to solidify the Eagles' shaky secondary with Minkah Fitzpatrick's elite talent.

The Philadelphia Eagles are eyeing a crucial offseason upgrade to build on their 11-6 season, which ended in a Wild Card disappointment. General Manager Howie Roseman is once again in the spotlight, tasked with enhancing the roster. One potential move involves reaching out to the Miami Dolphins, who are currently in the midst of significant roster changes, including cutting standout players like Tyreek Hill and Bradley Chubb.

The buzz around the league suggests that Dolphins safety Minkah Fitzpatrick could be on the move, and the Eagles might just be the perfect landing spot. According to a proposed trade scenario, the Eagles could send a 2026 third-round pick to Miami in exchange for Fitzpatrick.

Last season, the Eagles' defense ranked eighth against the pass, but there's room for improvement, particularly at the safety position. Reed Blankenship, despite starting 46 games over three seasons, has shown vulnerabilities, allowing a passer rating over 100 in two of those years. With $18 million in salary-cap space, the Eagles have the financial flexibility to fit Fitzpatrick into their plans, possibly by restructuring his contract to enhance guarantees.

Additionally, the Eagles are likely to receive a third-round compensatory pick for the loss of defensive tackle Milton Williams in free agency, making the trade for Fitzpatrick more feasible. This move would strengthen their secondary, providing a veteran presence alongside young talents like Andrew Mukuba, Quinyon Mitchell, and Cooper DeJean.

Fitzpatrick's credentials speak for themselves: five Pro Bowls and three All-Pro selections, including a tie for the NFL lead with six interceptions in 2022. His addition would address the Eagles' coverage concerns, as both Blankenship and rookie Mukuba faced challenges last season.

The Eagles have a history of successful trades with the Dolphins, as evidenced by the acquisition of edge rusher Jaelan Phillips. Roseman has a knack for executing strategic deals, and bringing Fitzpatrick to Philadelphia could be another masterstroke, solidifying an already formidable defense and positioning the Eagles as serious contenders.
