The NFL has pushed back hard after a Department of Homeland Security social media post used Brian Dawkins highlights without permission, and league officials have asked for the video to be removed.
The clip, which spread widely on Sunday evening, was posted by DHS in response to claims about a migrant caravan approaching the southern border. It paired violent game footage with a pregame chant from Dawkins, the former Philadelphia Eagles safety and Hall of Famer. The post opened with Dawkins getting himself fired up and chanting his signature phrase before cutting to a string of big collisions.
According to league spokesman Brian McCarthy, the NFL has asked DHS to take the video down. Neither the league nor the Eagles approved the use of the footage.
DHS captioned the post, “Our time has come.” Dawkins later addressed the matter directly, saying, “I have very respectfully not given permission.” In another video response, he made clear that his name, image and likeness had been used without consent.
Despite the NFL’s request, the original post was still online through Monday evening. DHS responded to questions by saying it is playing lockdown defense at the border and will use every available tool to keep Americans safe. The agency’s statement also referenced Dawkins’ old “Weapon X” nickname.
This isn’t the first time official accounts have turned to NFL material. Earlier this year, the White House posted a video that mixed football highlights with footage tied to military action in Iran.
The NFL did not comment publicly then, and that clip remained online for months. Ryan Clark also previously criticized the White House over what he called embarrassing actions involving similar use of sports footage.
The league controls official game film and typically does not allow outside groups to reuse it without approval. A team source confirmed that neither the Eagles nor the NFL gave consent for this video.
Dawkins played 13 of his 16 professional seasons in Philadelphia and was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 2018. His punishing style and intense pregame routine helped make him a favorite in Philadelphia.
For now, the DHS video is still circulating, and the NFL has not said whether it will take any additional legal action beyond the takedown request.
