Tanner McKee is moving into the Eagles’ No. 2 quarterback job for today’s game against the Rams, according to NFL Network’s Mike Garafolo, ending Andy Dalton’s brief run in the role after a costly interception in Chicago.
Dalton’s moment came late in the second quarter Monday night at Soldier Field, with the Bears already ahead 7-0 and Jalen Hurts out while being checked for a concussion. The Eagles were in the red zone when Dalton entered, and on his first pass as an Eagle - a third-and-goal snap from the 2-yard line - rookie safety Dillon Thieneman picked him off in the end zone as Dalton tried to squeeze the ball to Dontayvion Wicks. Chicago then turned the turnover into a field goal and rolled to a 27-7 win.
That play had already put Dalton’s hold on the backup job in doubt, especially after Sean Mannion said Thursday he wished he had handled the situation differently.
“Obviously, with the outcome, it's one certainly I wish I could have back if I could do it over again,” he said. “On my end, obviously, in hindsight, being 20-20, I wish I would've called something different.”
Dalton and McKee spent the summer battling for the No. 2 spot, and Dalton won it despite McKee drawing stronger reviews across camp. Nick Sirianni, asked Wednesday whether Dalton would keep the job, wouldn’t commit to anyone.
“I still have faith in that entire (room), with Tanner, I still have faith in Andy, I still like the way that Cole (rookie Cole Payton) is developing and so yeah I still love that room,” he said. “I got a lot of faith in everybody in that room.”
Dalton, once a three-time Pro Bowler with the Bengals, is now 34-55-1 in 90 starts since 2016 and has played for six teams since 2019. His 85.4 passer rating over the last 10 years ranks ninth-worst among 54 quarterbacks with at least 1,000 pass attempts in that span.
McKee, a sixth-round pick in 2023, spent his rookie year as the Eagles’ third-string quarterback behind Hurts and Marcus Mariota, then was behind Kenny Pickett in 2024 before moving back to No. 2 last year. In six career games, he has completed enough to post five touchdowns, one interception and a 99.5 passer rating, and he’s 1-1 in two career starts.

Lane Johnson Update Leaves Eagles Fans With A Bigger Concern
Lane Johnson will sit out the upcoming game against the Los Angeles Rams because of a personal matter, leaving the Eagles without one of their most important and most reliable pieces on the offensive line. For a team that leans so heavily on stability up front, any absence from Johnson carries weight, especially given how central he has been to Philadelphias run in recent seasons.
Johnsons status also comes with a larger long-term backdrop after he announced plans to retire following the 2026 NFL season. He already dealt with a Lisfranc injury that cost him part of last season, so even a short-term update like this tends to invite bigger questions about what comes next for an aging cornerstone in the middle of another demanding year. Saquon Barkleys Latest Injury Leaves Eagles Facing A Bigger Concern
Saquon Barkleys latest setback arrived during the game against the Los Angeles Rams, when a hamstring injury forced the Eagles to take him out for the rest of the afternoon. Philadelphia had already been managing his workload after he missed most of Week 2 with a stinger, and the timing only adds to the concern around a backfield that was built to lean on him early and often.
Tank Bigsby stepped in after Barkley exited, with Will Shipley also picking up snaps as the Eagles tried to piece together the running game on the fly. Barkley has still produced 174 rushing yards through the first four weeks, but the bigger worry now is whether this is becoming a pattern rather than a one-off, and how long Philadelphia can keep its ground game on track if he keeps getting dinged up. Eagles May Need Saquon To Save Them In Shorthanded Rams Test
The Eagles head into Week 4 with a long injury list and little margin for error, which puts a brighter spotlight on a familiar answer. With DeVonta Smith, Zack Baun and Dallas Goedert among the key names dealing with issues, Philadelphias margin on both sides of the ball gets thinner as the Rams come to town. That has a way of pushing the game plan toward Saquon Barkley, who may need to carry more of the load on the ground while the rest of the offense tries to keep pace.
Jeremiah Trotter Jr. is in line to start at linebacker for Baun, and that adds another layer to what already looks like a difficult test for Vic Fangios defense. The Eagles will need a cleaner pass rush to bother Matthew Stafford and a sharper answer to a Rams passing attack that can stress a secondary if it is left on its heels. Philadelphia can still make this a manageable game, but with so many key pieces sidelined, it may have to do it the hard way. [Read more 🡒]
