Week 2 handed the Eagles something close to a free lane in the NFC East.
The weekend was brutal for a wave of young quarterbacks, and three injuries in particular reshaped the division picture around Philadelphia. Chicago Bears quarterback Caleb Williams hurt his hamstring, and his status for the Eagles’ Week 3 Monday Night Football matchup is still unsettled. In the NFC East, Washington Commanders quarterback Jayden Daniels dislocated his elbow in a loss to the Dallas Cowboys, while New York Giants quarterback Jaxson Dart is dealing with what looks like a season-ending knee injury after the loss to the Los Angeles Rams.
None of that is good news for the league. But for the Eagles, it strips away a lot of the wiggle room. There’s no clean excuse left if this team doesn’t win the division.
The path is suddenly staring right at Philadelphia. The Bears game looks far more manageable if Williams is out and Tyson Bagent, who is in concussion protocol, can’t go either. That would leave the Eagles facing Case Keenum.
The Giants’ situation could be even more decisive if Dart is done for the year. That would put Jameis Winston in line for the two meetings with Philadelphia and would effectively wipe New York out of the race for the division.
Washington is also in a tough spot. Daniels is expected to miss time, which could open the door for former Eagles backup Marcus Mariota to start against his old team for the second straight season on November 1 if Daniels is not back by then.
So while those injuries matter across the NFL, they also leave Dallas as the one team Philadelphia really has to keep an eye on. The Cowboys have the third-worst rushing attack in the league at 67.5 yards per game and have been shaky on defense. They still have a good offense, but the Eagles look like the clear favorites in the division.
And if they still somehow don’t finish the job, the fallout could be real.
Nick Sirianni might not survive it as head coach. That’s how much is on the line here, and how little patience there would be if this roster lets the NFC East slip away.
The Eagles may have issues of their own. The safety spot is a problem, and the interior offensive line is a mess. But on paper, they’re too talented to waste a division that has basically been handed to them.
They’ve been gift-wrapped the NFC East, and anything short of winning it by December would be a letdown. Missing out entirely would likely mean missing the playoffs, which would be flat-out inexcusable with this roster. In that scenario, nobody would be safe, including Sirianni and Sean Mannion.
For Philadelphia, the message is simple: the excuses are gone. Now they have to take the division.
