The A.J. Brown trade has been debated for more than a month, but a new leak from EA Sports’ Madden NFL 27 has given the Eagles another reason to feel good about how it played out.
Philadelphia sent Brown to the New England Patriots, where he is set to become Drake Maye’s top target. In return, the Eagles landed a 2027 fifth-round pick and a 2028 first-round pick. The question has lingered since then: who actually won the deal?
If the leaked ratings are any indication, the Eagles have a strong case.
Madden NFL 27 reportedly has several Philadelphia players inside the top 100 overall and top 100 rookies. The list includes Lane Johnson at 97, Saquon Barkley at 92, Zack Baun at 92, DeVonta Smith at 92, Jordan Mailata at 91, Dallas Goedert at 89, Cooper DeJean at 89, Quinyon Mitchell at 89, Makai Lemon at 76, Markel Bell at 73, and Eli Stowers at 72.
The most notable number on that list is Smith’s 92 overall. Brown’s rating was not revealed because he was not in the top 100, and Smith was ranked ahead of him among NFL wide receivers, trailing only six others at the position in overall rating.
That lines up with what happened on the field. Smith led the Eagles in receiving yards for the first time since Brown arrived in Philadelphia in 2022, finishing with 1,008 yards and edging Brown by five.
Brown’s 2025 season also showed signs of decline. Some pointed to frustration with his role and the idea that he was taking plays off, but the bigger issue was that he no longer created the separation he once did. There were also more rough moments, including the drops in the NFC Wild Card Game loss to the San Francisco 49ers last season.
For anyone who watched the Eagles closely last year, Smith looked like the better receiver. Madden 27 seems to agree, and that only adds to the sense that Philadelphia got the better end of the trade and the first-round pick fans had been hoping for.
He is ready to take that role and run with it. The Eagles appear to be the winners of the trade so far.
